My husband likes to watch the re-runs of Only Fools and Horses. I've told him that if our son calls him a plonker it's his own fault.

You need to use some common sense - having Jezzer Kyle on in the morning is likely to do a child permanent damage if you ask me! With all the screaming, talk of sex and drugs, sleeping with your wifes sister etc, and as it's day time telly it must be classified as a U surely?

  • No way would my son be allowed to watch an outright horror and I was amazed the amount of parents who brought their very young children to see the Dark Knight when it came out, although I suppose there was very few actual scenes of nastiness, but I'm amazed that film got a 12 rating.

I think chastising parents who allow their kids to watch soaps is a bit much (we don't watch soaps because I can't stand them!), even Tom and Jerry has scenes with Jerry battering Tom with a frying pan or Elmer Fudd wandering around with a gun trying to shoot a wabbit. I agree with the above poster, do not underestimate your childs intellegence!

I think it is up to individual parents what they let their children watch - if they are prepared to explain what is happening to their children and they are confident their children won't be freaked out by it!

Comparison between cartoon silly violence and soaps - if you don't watch 'enders' you won't have seen last week when Jack beat up Max and put a gun in his face (blood everywhere) and who could forget the controversy when Tania attempted to bury Max alive in a coffin in the woods at the start of the year...doesn't have much luck Max does he? :)

The violence is happening to 'real' people in soaps and I wouldn't want to explain it to my 4 year old daughter and I know that she would take in all in and it would play on her mind - another child might be different but I know my own kids - guess in cartoons it's pretty obvious it's not real but it's violence never the less abeit slightly unrealistic! :D

For me it's not a case of underestimating my daughters intelligence - simply feeling it is inappropriate for her to be viewing adult material with adult storylines which she shouldn't have to understand at the age of 4 I guess

It's a difficult one, TBH when they are very young they've no idea, we used to go to a cinema in Hampstead (the everyman for all you londoners) where you could take an under 1, we saw a few films (micheal clayton, control are 2 that spring to mind) there, it was never a problem. That said I certainly wouldn't let him watch Eastenders which is a very unpleasant programme IMHO.

 That's shocking! I used to watch eastenders (after the children had gone to bed) but it got too depressing for me. I hated the storyline where they killed den. Zoe lied about being pregnant, slept with her boyfriend's dad to deliberately get pregnant to carry on with the lie, then aborted the baby she had deliberately concieved and killed and buried den. Sickening.

I agree about jeremy kyle, that's poisonous - the thought of toddlers watching makes me shudder.

There's plenty of vile stuff parents can watch in front of their children during the daytime without censure, the OP's dvds seem tame in comparison!

That's it !!. Do you actually see anyone being nice to someone else in Eastenders?, it's a grubby little show.

Sorry Galvanisersbaby, I must spend too much time on boards as I'm using too many initials for things!
BM = Birth Mother, they are my StepKids (DSS= Darling Step Son).

We had them to stay with us quite a lot of the time when they were younger, and their Dad & I decided we would set our own rules for them while they were with us. DH didn't approve of a lot of his Ex's rules (or lack of) which became very slack after they split up, but we didn't say anything to the kids, just let them know the rules of our house!

I thought it was Best Mate!

    I've got Gremlins on video, and it's a 15!

I got Gremlins 2 about a year ago when DS was 6, thinking what a funny little kiddy film for him to watch, didn't even notice it was 15 until my sister pointed it out and it was too late by then!

My DS 7 loves Only Fools and Horses and Fawlty Towers.

I agree, some programmes that are on early are more unsuitable than some that are on later!
