Dallas gave the message that it was OK to lie, cheat, wheel and deal, stab your family and friends in the back, lie to them, have multiple affairs and murder.

Suitable for a child?

I don't think so.

Well I watched it as a child and grew up to work for charities like Oxfam and Barnardos. I'm a qualified first-aider and I regularly stop to help strangers (human of animal) in difficulty. I have on occasion put my safety in jeopardy to help others. I have also been pushed out of two jobs (with large corporations) because I stood up for the rights of others in my capacity as shop steward. So obviously it made absolutely no difference to me.

I think you have under-estimated your children's ability to differentiate tv from reality and your ability to help them understand.

I know that there are some films I watched as a child and had no problem with, whereas now I find them scary or disturbing due to implied themes etc. It must have gone over my head when I was younger, and I definitely wasn't desensitized because my TV watching was quite conservative.
I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right

My children aged 12, 5 and 3 sat and watched ghostbusters 2 last night on tv, but talking to a mum at school todayshe said she wouldn't of let her son see it as its scary, but mine thought it was funny, though i do remember watching lost boys as a kid and having a nightmare about it, but apart from that one night ive not had any lasting effects and ive seen the film loads of times.

My children have watched top gun, leathal weapon, goonies, police academy, home alone(how many parent i know won't let their kids watch this).

My eldest has been watching the bill since he was about 6/7 as it was the only night he was allowed to stay up late and watch tv.

I think everyone knows their kids well enough to know what is suitable for them and whats not.

I have 3 children aged, 11, 9 and 3 and agree it can be a problem at times. Having said that though my 3 year old loves the Daleks whereas I can remember being terrified by them as a small child but then she's been used to them since she was a newborn and we used to sit her in her rocker chair on the floor whilst her brother who is the owner of a remote control, talking model used to send it towards her telling her that she was an enemy of the Daleks and that she must obey!!!! . Its a bit more difficult with films though, my older son loves the Bond films but I think they can be a bit violent for children at times even though they often seem to be showing watered down versions on ITV in the afternoons. I wasn't too happy about letting either him or his sister watch some of the scenes in Casino Royale when we got the DVD copy. The trick though is to grab the remote control from the kids and skip past the bits you wouldn't want them to watch and to always watch anything which might be a little bit suspect with them for the first time because that way you can answer any queries which might arise and hide the DVD if after having watched it you don't think its suitable for them. Also if they have friends over and are going to be watching a film then I think its only fair to check with their parents whether or not they have seen the film and if the parents are ok with their child watching it because what one parent might think is ok for one child another parent might not!!!!

This thread is reminding me of a work-mate once telling me she'd been banned from watching 'Butterflies'. My work-mate was in her 20's and married but living at her IL's as they couldn't afford a house of their own and it was her MIL who wouldn't let her watch it, in case it gave her ideas about starting an affair!
I watched Butterflies, a google search has told me I must have been between 12-16 at the time and I never realised that's what Ria was thinking of. Perhaps I was too busy ogling Nicholas Lyndhurst.:p

BTW OP, why do you have to stop the activity?
There are hundreds of films you could all watch that are U and PG, just because you dont particularily like them at least your LO will be entertained?

DH & I have always tried to be be very careful about what TV & video games the DSK's watch/play..... We didn't always go by the age rating but if in doubt we watched it first and decided if WE thought it was suitable. We were aware that the BM was not so careful, as she bought a 15 rated game he had asked for, for DSS#2 birthday when he was 12 - we sent it back to her with a polite note saying that we didn't think it suitable due to the age rating!

This Hallowe'en we wanted to watch a 'scary' film, but had DSS#2 (the youngest, now at age 14) with us. I wanted to watch Sweeney Todd, but when I checked the age rating it was 18, and we hadn't seen it so we played it safe and chose something else.
DSS#2's verdict 'it was Ok, but Sweeney Todd was much better!' - he'd already seen it at his BM's house! GRR!!!!

Sometimes you do all you can to protect 'em and bring 'em up right, but you can't win 'em all.........

Back to the OP though - I have seen with my DGS, now 2.5, how he picks up things from the TV that you think he wouldn't notice - even one of the adverts for a particular channel where there was a group of people clapping - he started clapping as soon as it came on, before the people on screen did - and his mum says he does things like this all the time! I think they pick up on a lot more than we expect, so better to be on the safe side IMO and go for 'family films'.
