Camshaft snap after 24,000 miles 05 reg

  • I've got an 05 plate corsa Exclusiv and the camshaft went bang when we were doing 75mph! We lost all power and the exhaust management system light came on causing us to drift into a layby which was luckily near us.
We had to be towed back to our garage where we were told that it was the Camshaft and our friendly mechanic had spoken to his contact at Vauxhall to which he as told that it was a known problem! The inital bill was quoted to us at £473 and Vauxhall would pay £174 towards it. They ordered the part and we have now been told this morning that more damage had been done to the insides and the bill has now risen to £1275!. We are going back to Vauxhall to give them what for and to try and demand that they pay 3/4 of this - what are our chances?????
Quite hacked off now especially as they 'knew' about this and letters were sent out a couple of months ago! Our surname begins with a W so we will probably get our letter in July!!!!!
Not a happy Corsa driver/owner - we've had other recalls on other Corsa models over the past 10 years so will definately buy our next new car with another manufacturer!!

Not sure how this Vauxhall Lifetime warranty is going to stack up. :rotfl:
  • quite common for vauxhall newer cam shafts to snap they are probably just seeing how thin they can make them to save costs they probably bumped the thickness up now. Just finding the optimum strength/ weight ratio shame it happened to you

ive not seen it on the older 80's engines but these new ones are a fragile

I recall a 1986 1600 cav with a camshaft snapped completely in 1/2 and that was a thick walled one. It may be getting more frequent but it's certainly not a new problem to VX
