Has anyone come across a thomas the tank engine or pingu colouring book? I'm making my niece (nearly 28 months) a little shopping bag with crayon roll and want to include a colouring book and some other crafty age-specific stuff (as she loves colouring at the moment) for christmas.

Pingu and Thomas are the two 'characters' she likes the most (although possibly because they're the only things she's allowed to watch!) but I've not come across any in the shops. I saw a thomas activity and colouring book combined but it looked a bit grown-up for her, as although she's reallyy bright I think dot-to-dot, etc are probably a bit too hard for her!

    Hi
If you have a 'Range' near you they have loads of charactor activity stuff such as colouring books usually from 99p

Fantastic baskets everyone. I love the perfect man gingerbread, there a great idea and the poem is well... :D

Anyway i was looking for a bit of inspiration for my mothers gift. Shes not really someone who likes bubble bath/pj's things like that and insists the only real present she wants is a mobile phone. But i want to add a bit of christmas spirit to it.

So she likes elderflower and i came up with idea of getting 2 bottles of the cordial, some fancy glasses and some Elderflower seeds! But then i found out they were poisonous to animals (the seeds) - no go for cat lovers!
So now im stuck as to what else to put in!

Could you perhaps buy/make some elderflower biscuits/jam? Maybe you might be able to get scented candles/room spray/perfume too?

So, what can I get her for Christmas ? I don't want to repeat what I did for her birthday but am really stuck.

Mary, thought Audio books would be a great idea for your Mum, but having read your replies, I think I'd opt for one of the following:

Buying an old favourite or new book that you read to her every time you visit. Maybe you could commit to a frequency to do just this.

A memory box/jar where you write shared memories that she can read or have read to her. Or an appreciation/'things I'm glad you taught me Mum' jar along a similar vein. Again you could record these if reading is an issue, although perhaps the Nurses could read her one every night before sleep (or morning), which would remind her she was loved.

Some new bedding and room spray if she's allowed it. You could spray it every time you visit.

lunar - thanks for the ideas. She has a lot of books and certain ones are her favourites so I always make a point of reading a bit to her when I'm there. If I'm not able to finish it her friend takes over on my behalf.
Not sure about the bedroom spray - she tends to cough quite a bit and it might aggravate it too much -don't want to take any chances.
We've collated a sort of 'memory box' from when she was first in the home........photos of me and her with Dad..........the old black and white ones taken on holidays and they always bring the memories back and she loves it. The places where they were taken and when are marked on the back and its enough to get her going on filling in the rest.
Seems most things have been covered what with birthdays, mothers days and christmases over the last 4 years.

Think I might opt for the silk pillowcase/cushion. I've seen some really pretty ones I know she'd like and if all they do is give her the 'feel good factor' thats enough I think. Can't expect much more.
Thinking a fleece wrap may not be such a good idea as she's spending more time in bed than in her chair,
Thanks for your help.............memory box/book is something worth thinking about for me and my own kids in the future - its such a good idea.

You're welcome. However I was thinking more along the lines of written down memories as opposed to a bulkier box with photos and other mementos. Same for the appreciation jar, which would contain say 50 small pieces of paper that you'd write/type things on such as 'I'm so grateful you read to me every night at bedtime until I was a teenager because it helped instill a love of books and reading in me' type thang. Or 'every time I walk past a lavender bush it reminds me of snuggling up in your bed as a child' :)

lunar - I know what you mean and its a super idea. Don;t think I'd get time now to do it for Mum though, not and make a decent job of it.
Something worth thinking about for Mothers Day I think.............I've always written more personal things in poetry form for her then.
The box we've got is a bit smaller than a shoe box and its full of photos and little mementoes that I keep meaning to put into some kind of album.
I could take something from my family history file for her that might serve the purpose. I'd done a whole piece about Mum, what she was like as a child (from what she'd told me) when she met Dad, where we lived,holidays.........all with photographs and a few postcards and other bits and pieces.I could put that together in a photo album for her. Easy to do as its really already done and just needs transferring from my history stuff to a pretty album.
    Thanks.

I have made these for friends at work using a square shaped vase from Tesco sale. Think they were just under £2. Used werthers, 2 lots of goldy coloured roses chocolates from a local cheap shop and tescos own dairy toffees in shiny gold wrapper. Am going to attach a label with poem on and a scratchcard.

  • Sorry rwaite, I knew it was someone beginning with R but for some reason thought it was rainmac ... Thankyou for the link, I will buy one later on, my MIL emailed me back last night and said my FIL likes ginger and rhubarb jam ... is this 2 different jams do you think or 1 jam? lol

Sophies mum that hamper looks amazing!!! Where did you buy your basket from? I want some like that for easter!

It was recycled from a charity shop and cost 20p:j , best time is to look a few weeks after xmas when everyone is clearing out unwanted pressies. I have picked up lots of baskets through yer in charity shops, then just give them a shower and dry off:D
