MONEY MORAL DILEMMA: Should you come clean about the extra refund?

  • I have had occasions where I have been short-changed in shops & pointed it out to them & been made to feel like a criminal, as if I was trying to pull a fast one in front of other customers. I have even had a shop tell me I had to wait until they cashed-up at the end of the day! So yes, I would keep quiet about the money.

If the mistake was in their favour and they found out about it at the end of the day, do you think they'd refund the difference? I think not.
Take every bonus you can from their failures to make up for the times when you lose due to similar mistakes.

I'd keep quiet and i have done on several occasions!
  • Afraid to say that if I produced the receipt and the shop assistant gave me the full amount, not the amount stated on the receipt, I would keep the difference. Yes, it's not right but that's tough - I've got some morals but not when it comes to big shops (although have to say that for a small boutique, might point it out so I've got a confused mind...)

Besides, I frequently find that shops try to charge prices above what is stated on the ticket - the other week Tescos delivered me my weekly shop and I noticed after the driver had left that the 3 bottles of wine I had ordered had all been charged at twice the price I'd ordered it at - when I rang the home shopping line, they made out they were doing me a favour by refunding me the difference and letting me have it at the price I'd ordered, cheeky wotsits. They were probably just hoping that I wouldn't notice and they could pocket more of my money - two can play at that game...
  • I'd probably keep it (guess I'm a bad person then........ :o )

    Remember the MoneySaving mantras!

    IF YOU'RE SKINT......
Do I need it? Can I afford it? Can I find it cheaper anywhere else?

    IF YOU'RE NOT SKINT......
Will I use it? Is it worth it? Can I find it cheaper anywhere else?

Tesco refunded me in full including a £9 off voucher a couple of weeks ago. So I made £9. Did I tell them? Dont be ridiculous!

I think the only time I would tell someone is if it was a business belonging to a friend or somewhere that I was a regular.

Er.. they probably were doing you a favour. The price on the website is a 'guide price' only and if the prices change in the store before your shopping is done (by the staff in the shop on your delivery day) you pay the price that day. You cant miss it, comes up at the end of every transaction.
  • I would so pocket the difference! And I would leave with a smile on my face too! Maybe its right, maybe its wrong but its their mistake so more fool them!
  • No question. I would tell them. Size doesn't matter. You are still cheating if you don't tell them, whether its a pound or a penny.
Besides, How do you know that the assistant won't get the sack when/if the mistake comes to light.
  • This happened to my best friend in a well known supermarket. We both went to buy a printer but when we went to the cashier instead of the price which was under the printer boxes she was charged a much higher price (doubled). We told them that it was a lower price so they checked and said that it was the wrong price but since it was there we could have the printers at the lower price, £49.
So they cancelled the price on her receipt and charged her the lower price.
She got home and her dh said he didn't like it so a couple of days later she went back with the printer and receipt and was given back the higher price. She said nothing.
