hex unfortunately not too many wise words from me, my oldest HATES story books. Instead he has factual books. I love the Usbourne ones, he seems to enjoy them a lot more. Ones based on factual stuff is always a hit here too. He loved these when he was 5/6 http://www.usborne.co.uk/catalogue/browse.asp?css=1&cat=1&subject=r&subcat=IB of course you might be able to get them cheaper elsewhere. The quote off the website says it all really 'Great reading practice for children who prefer fact to fiction'.
My DH and I are bookworms but DD1 didn't enjoy reading until she was about 10. I think her reading matter is still very limited though - she's read the Princess Diaries series and is now reading it again rather than trying something else
DS doesn't like fiction, but does like reading Horrible Histories atm. It seems to be more of a male thing though preferring reading fact to fiction - well the men in my family anyway!0 -
Hex.. don't push it!! He will learn that reading is fun to do in time.. he is developing in other areas at the moment. DS2 was 10 before he read a book for the sheer enjoyment.. DS3 was 8.. DS1 was about 8 months old lol.. they are all so different and boys are notoriously later than girls for picking up the more boring aspects of learning.. reading.. writing etc.. they prefer to 'do' on the whole.. stereotyping here of course!
I agree - all children are different. Some never learn to read for enjoyment(
but that's just me speaking as a total book addict :rotfl:). Boys do learn differently, which is a very good reason for having separate sex schools (or at least classes)
having people read to you is a pita.. they always read at the wrong pace.. I read really fast and often read ahead when things are being read out to a group.. ie in class.. He will get there his teacher will just have to be patient!!
My big bugbear when I was at school. Having to take turns reading out a few paragraphs in class. I used to read ahead to myself, especially when I had to listen to someone reading frustratingly s.l.o.w.l.y. Then it came to my turn to read and I wouldn't have a clue where we were up to and got told off for it! "Guided reading" or whatever they call it these days doesn't serve any useful purpose as far as I can see - and my two HATE it!Oh.. get him an encyclopaedia.. they have snippets of information which is eays to memorise.. and therefore learn to recognise the individual words and helps the general knowledge.. Mine have the kingfisher childrens encyclopaedia and it is brilliant. Also when he asks what a word means or a thing is encourage him to look it up in a book to find out the information he needs.. it all helps.. and he will realise reading can help you understand the world and will be encouraged.. mine once asked how a volcano works.. they had been looking at them at school but not actually covered the whole topic.. so we grabbed the book and looked it up.. the book was left on the table and next time I looked they were soaking it up.. definitely a good buy there!
My DS went through a phase of being obsessed with volcanoes when he was in year 3! The Kingfisher book is a good idea - I must get one. We've got the Kingfisher history one but not a general one.
Piggers you always have very wise advice.0 -

Oh my goodness has he done it!!!!:j
Just been off and checked website, i am amazed i had a feeling he wouldn't get it for all the wrong reasons at least they made the first change. The first black American president!!!! And least he can talk without saying erm erm erm so that should be a refreshing change too.
How weird i was slightly excited at the american presidential election, am i weird! You can touch the dust but please don't write in it !
Would you like to speak to the man in charge, or the woman who knows whats happening?0 -
Flower I entirely agree with you. I was about to get off on a right old rant about the councils and their arbitrary decisions, and how that gives the media license to make merry. However, I kind of thought I'd said enough, and better stop before I go too far!!!!
Anyway..... WooHoo....Obama!!!! We carried on watching in bed till about 3.20, when I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer.
So today I'm going to take it steady. The pooch is not getting walked by me today. I'm doing the school run, and making dinner - that's it.
Toots I said it last night, but will say again, have as good a time as you can. We'll all miss you, and will see you next Tuesday.
Have a good day everyone.
