Hi All, I haven't made any overpayments yet and I have just received some very worrying news from my leaseholder...............................they are proposing an enormous upgrade of the building in which I have my flat. New roof, replacement lifts and complete internal and external redecoration and new flooring. My contribution will be just under £15,000. In this financial climate they must be mad this will push some people into losing their flat it will be a real set back in my plans. If this sounds calm I am doing well because underneath i am raging. I will be in contact with my solicitors on Monday, wish me luck. Leasehold flats are a pain!

Have been lurking, but not taken the plunge yet.

But signed remortgage papers yesterday, so I think it's time!

Put me down with an overpayment goal of £6k. That's the max we can overpay without penalty (tho the penalty is only 1%, so if we can, we'll overpay more).
  • Hello I have stumbled across your excellent thread.
I am amazed at the amount people are overpaying! Well done everyone :T

I want to start overpaying this year, but my target of £600 (£50pm) seems so small compared to others. Although once we stop forking out loads for childcare (a few years yet!) This will increase dramatically!

I guess we all start somewhere

£50 a month is a decent amount, it will definitely knock a year or two off your Mortgage free date I should think:D
But these things take time, I know that I'm, the most inept that ever stepped.

January overpayment of £600 has been made.

I'm hoping to add a little more before the month ends.

Hi Blueberry and Budget_budd - I have added you to the first post - so good luck with the challenge, dont forget to PM me each month with you OP for the year and a YTD total (please include your number too)

Budget_budd - why not find an mortgage OP calculator - theres one on the bbc website or on egg - it will show you how much of a difference even a small OP each month can make.
    Welcome to both of you

  • Hi all... I hope your having a good month. I haven't made the overpayment yet (waiting to be sure come payday next week that my OT and expenses come through ok!!) but I just wanted to say thanks for all of the inspiration.

I've done so much in this last week towards sorting my medium term finances out...from re-arranging bank accounts (thanks A&L - got my £100 account through;), to proper budgeting with some of your amazing spreadsheets/overpayment calcs, telling my friends so their expectations are realistic, and they don't try to detract me, setting up a penny jar, raarranging utilities, found out friday how much interest I pay every day 12.23!!!!, have had 2 valuations of flat (am trying to step up to a slighty bigger place at the same time), sorted some ebay stuff, earnt £20 Mystery Shopping - I never even knew that existed this time last week.

Anyway - enough rambling, I just wanted to say a really huge thanks. Hopefully will be back with a figure later in the week!
