A lot of malicious programs load automatically into your Temporary Internet Files folder (in IE). You can configure IE to empty this folder every time you close it by going to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced; go down to the Security section, locate Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed, and put a check in the box. Click Apply, and then OK.

Also a lot of problems arise from the baddies using exploits in software - hence Windows Tuesday.

My own personal expereinces with Norton have ALL been bad. I personally wouldnt touch it with a barge pole
The tests ive just now looked at put Norton in 13th place out of 16!
Norton even made my mates Internet Explorer stop working when he quarantined some spyware that had got through within one week of receiving his new laptop!
Each to their own, im simply advising to get rid of it.

That's pretty convincing as far as I am concerned. I know my brother (quite knowledgeable on IT matters) isn't keen on Norton

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/10/13/secunia_security_suite_tests/ makes interesting reading too, even though Symantec didn't get everything!

Latest review by PCAnswers puts Norton quite high up, especially its 2009 version. But going back to the original problem, some of the problems on the OP's pc may well interfere with Norton installing. Does the machine have all the Microsoft updates? EG, with XP, I think you need service pack 2 as a minimum to be installed.

Point 10 was interesting; points to free software.

I take the point you are making, there are a variety of ways in which you can become infected. There are also a variety of ways to protect yourself, dependent on your surfing style

Its just so annoying that people do these malicious things, like creating these problems. Have they nothing better to do?

  • I have got an existing subscription with Norton which does not expire until January. I would rather I got my money's worth unless you really think I shouldn't!

ah...isn't it cute! No, Sonny, don't put your hand through the bars, it might bite or have rabies!

Norton has proved about as effective as a cheese slice, and slightly less flavoursome. If you don't feel you are getting full protection unless it costs money, then pay me £40 and I'll send the URL for Avira (free).
Alternatively, keep Norton, and use it in conjunction with a cheese slice, place the slice under your mouse after first smearing your monitor, this should stop all browsing, and remove the risk of internet borne virii

  • Norton = bad
    AVG 8 = good
