Mike - you've smoothed it all out with Klondike and I think that that's great but now you've taken a pop at all of us who have ever bought a book with the sole intent of selling it on.....

    apprentice tycoon.

i don't know who's misreading who at the moment.

how can i have a 'pop' at people that sell books they've bought from charity shops when i've done the same? i'm definately not having a 'pop' at anyone that buys from a charity shop.

as my response was in answer to a charity shop worker, and having bought myself, for gain as i've stated in other posts, how can i have a 'pop'?

where, in my opinion, the charity shop system 'falls down, is where staff who, if they were linked up to the internet, would know a fair price for a fair book.

the suggestion that people, dealers i'd imagine, were allowed a few minutes at the end of the day was what stood out for me in klondyke's post. but if anyone off the street were to gather up the books in one fell swoop, well so be it. i'm really not having a 'pop' at buyers.

when i mentioned 'poor' ppl, it was never my intention to cause offence either, especially to ppl in this topic. but i've read a few posts in the 'wanna be debt free', and thought if they only had the money to lay out, and the means of finding out a books true worth, they might be able to help with their debts.

but i seem to have upset a few ppl so i'll leave the whole subject of charity shops alone. i really was not going against your ethos of how books are recycled as they are, by ppl like 'us'.

my 'problem' is with how charity shops dump or offload books in a wholescale fashion. no book, in my honest opinion, is worth less than 50p to a quid. to just dump them annoys me, but thats just me maybe?

but can this be the last of it please? i can see that ppl agree with you more than me so i'm obviously wrong, or posting things that are open to confusion.

i'm sorry if i've upset anyone. i'll just read the topic in future.

thanks, and best of luck to all you sellers. i wish all of you well. :)

    mike
  • Hi Mike, I'm glad that you've clarified your points - and you're right, lets change the subject totally.

So - sold well this weekend? I'm afraid that I've sold nothing at all. hmmmph

May I just raise the charity shop binning of any kind of goods, not just books for one last time promise!:)

I overheard the manager of a charity shop saying that she just could not cope with the amount of stuff being brought in to the shop. That an awful lot of it was rubbish and that people were actually using the shop to get rid of their rubbish.- and that clearly is not fair. OK one mans rubbish is another man's treasure, but when it comes to books, lets face it there are many many gazillions all over the place and if some of them end up at the landfill I think it is something we have to accept. No doubt they get picked over yet again there, but there is no way we can save them all. We are doing our bit to redistribute and so are the charity shops.

Now lets all get back to selling. END OF!!! ;)

ps. AT I had a good week selling at least 11 items one of which dare I say it was £1.00 from a (whispers) charity shop and made a profit of £14.00! I was over the moon. :j

hi apprentice tycoon, and me too about changing the subject :)

i've sold one book today on green met, which is unusual, especially for a sunday. i think i sold a cd, book and dvd yesterday, but no massive profit. i had someone else delivering them though, i'm still full of cold and wasn't up for a session in the queue ;)

i'm still listing the books i bought as a job lot.

because they've been stored badly, i've looked, slapped a post-it note on some, and put them into a box with bicarbonate of soda - so thanks to whoever posted that hint again, and lost the smelly stuff so stuck a few scented candles in the box. i can't see any of them 'flying out' just yet, but i've got a bit of space to store them, and time - i hope ;) - to sit it out and wait while they do sell. *another hint, don't use asda cheapo wipes on books - i had to reduce one book by about a tenner. it was as bad as the fabreezy stuff lol.

and to vision-uk? i've sold cd's that have just been singles i've bought from high st shops, so i'm not sure why they're called 'imports' i look for the nearest description now and list them but explain all the faults or anything that might confuse the buyer. look for the cheapest first and work your way up to the best :)

Mike, my niece gave me some sachets of smelly (pleasant) things - that are made for drawers and it struck me that these could be placed between the pages of particular pongers! Just looked and they are from Laura Ashley and they are about the size of a small envelope. Perhaps your wife might treat you to some!!!:D

    me larmy? :o

i don't mind 'borrowing' hers, well, ruining them if i'm honest. she buys them as presents and i'll just 'use them ;)

seriously larmy, this last lot will keep me busy for a while. just tidying them up will take time, and as i've no sense of smell at the moment, i'm asking my mate to do a 'sniff test'. he thinks i'm as nuts as you? and my other mates do ;)

but i won't see a book go to the tip, not even a 1p one that's listed 3,000 times on all the sites.

one of my kids has a coal fire, so i'm hesitating on that one. but she welcomes the remnants of candles for lighting the fire. she can have the 1p scenty candles i'm using now but hope to finish with soon :o

    how's the selling going?

i think i should stress that its not unusual to sell one book on a Sunday at green met. it's just that on amazon, Sunday's always been the day i've sold the most, so maybe things are slowing down. gives me time to check out what i've got and the prices.

those 'lowest prices are deceiving, they can be anything 'but' the lowest price some days, so its always best to check for those ppl that don't. ;)

Hi - it's all gone a bit quiet with my sales lately. Had a good day on Friday though as got an email from someone asking if I'd sell a £25 book for £20 (bit cheeky eh? but got to admire their haggling - they are probably MSE'ers!). It had been knocking around for 3 months or so with no takers and I'd been about to lower the price anyway. So emailed them back to say I'd meet them halfway at £22.50 and they went for it. On the same day I sold a dvd I'd been given by DH for christmas that we've now watched, for the same price that he paid for it!!

Other than that nothing very much selling for me at the mo apart from a few £1.50 profit CDs - I've been sending them without COPs as can't be bothered to go to the PO.

Hi - I don't know if any of you work, and have the space to do it, but we operate a small 'read and return' library, the proceeds of which we give to charity. Basically people will bring in their unwanted books and if somebody wants to read it and then bring it back they are charged a set amount. If its a book they want to keep then the amount you pay for it is higher. I have bought one or two books from the 'library' which have sold well on Amazon and if the price I got was good then I put a little extra into the charity pot.
It could help the local charity shops from being overloaded with books they cant shift and have no room to store and at the same time make some money for other charities which perhaps don't run shops... oh and you might make something for yourself too... everyone is happy then :-)
