Great 'What to Buy in Pound Shops' Hunt. What should and shouldn't you grab?

My only gripe with pound shops is that they are badly laid out in my opinion. The queues are long and the aisles are too narrow. So looking at the items for sale in the aisles with people queuing for the tills is a nightmare!
Well, I don't mind queuing up for a few mins extra to save £s!"The reason we're successful, darling? My overall charisma, of course." -- Freddie Mercury

Brand Name Make-Up!
Root around in the cosmetics at Poundland Stores and you can find Maybelline, Bourjois, Rimmel, Max Factor and similar. It's their odds & ends but even so, a Max Factor Eyeliner pencil for £1.00 is a saving of £4.00 on the price in a department store (Boots £4.99). I go in about once a week to have a nosey round.
Brand Name Skincare & Bathing
Again, Poundland Stores. I have picked up St Ives, Fenjal, Badedas, Clearasil & Johnsons for a quid. It might have different language on the packing or something but it's the same product and much cheaper than Boots or Debenhams!
Edited to Add:
Harper Collins AudioBooks
Again, a weekly root around in the book/DVD/CD shelves has given me some beauties - eg: Meera Syal "Anita & Me" (Amazon £24.00) "An Audience with Barry Cryer" (Amazon £15.99)
I listen to them once or twice, keep them carefully clean and then bung them on ebay and they usually sell for a fiver or more sometimes. Poundland actually makes me money!!0 -
Matey & Mer Matey Bubble Bath. £1.58 in Tesco and Sainsburys, one squid in Poundland. The man without a signature.0

I love Pound shops, I don't know why people are embarrassed to go or laugh at you when you say you go to them....more fool them! I love the fact that you can pick up so many bargains! I mainly go in Poundland, £stretcher and the 99p stores
My recommendations are JIFFY BAGS....I think you get a pack of 5 medium sized bags for a £1...great value esp to cut your costs with eBay packaging!
CLEANING PRODUCTS-You can pick up some great cleaning products. Like the sink unblocker that comes in a big fat orange bottle...I hate paying £4 for a similar product that you are literally just pouring away! So this is great value!
Also there's an orange kitchen spray in a orangey coloured trigger bottle-it makes your kitchen smell devine, and gets through the grease.
I buy toilet rim blocks, glade airfreshners etc...you can get the usual brands or a multipack of their own...
I bought a flash magic eraser, which other people have recommended in this thread, and the dryer balls which are usually £10 from Lakeland...I've already had orders for my mum and friends at work!
GROCERIES- My favourite is the GALAXY HOT CHOCOLATE drink. It's usually 33% extra free and is the best hot chocolate in my opinion...this is usually £2.50+ in Sainsburys. They also usually have the Maltesers hot choc drink as well. ROBINSONS...I picked up a massive bottle (2litre) of orange squash...a bargain!...Tracker and Harvest chewee bars with extra free..great for kids lunch boxes...Chipsticks crisps multipack with 50$ extra free...Also there's always a large selection of continental style bakery goods which look really nice...although I avoid that stuff as I'm trying to be good!
OTHERS- Halloween was great...loads of decorations and sweets (no reactions here!) All the Xmas stuff is in
Last Xmas I picked up a couple of small items to add to kids xmas presents--one was a multipack of minature glittery scented gel pens...a few months ago, my niece told me that it was the best xmas present she had! So it's good to know that you don't have to spend a fortune to impress the kids!
BATTERIES- At Xmas time we're always in need of batteries for toys etc...they don't always last that long, but it's better than having no batteries when the kids want their new toys to work!0 -
Yesterday my girlfriend bought 14 tubes of Neutrogena hand cream which usually costs at least £3.50 in boots etc. from Poundland.
I bought a couple of tubes but have decided they are not the same formula as those sold in regular chemists. In Boots the content is more concentrated. So when Boots or Sainsbury's or whoever have special offers they may actually be better value.0 -
Look for brands that you know, the "own-brand" stationary, etc... is not very good sometimes.
In poundland on friday, I got a big box of cadburys fingers in Norwich. Yummy...
I love those shops. I can also, sometimes get glowsticks, at like £3 for 30 instead of the £1 for 25/30 I can get in poundland.lol0 -
I would avoid the painkillers - they often sell them 3 for £1 in poundland but you can buy them in Wilko/Asda etc for 19p

I would only buy branded sanitary towels. After buying some unbranded ones for 2 packs for a £1 when I was a student, lets just say the pads didn't have enough stickiness and caused a right lot of embarrassment!:o"The reason we're successful, darling?
