To put it closer to context, it's like asking somebody from Inverness what part of England they are from! The countries may be joined by a border, but are separate constitutional entities.
*promises to sit down with Soolin and tell her all about the history of the division of Ireland at some point...!
no... that would be like asking someone from Inverness what part of Britain they are from. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -
            anyhow.... the car is sold.
the british guy from Belfast lost out because he was either to slow to respond or didn't like my counter offer.
thanks folks! The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -

northern ireland is in ireland. hell they even adopted its name as part of their own name!
i know three people from n. ireland who all call themselves.... wait for it.... ...irish!
i also know some black people who refer to themselves as black. i even know english people call themselves english. and none of them have ever taken offense when i called the irish, black or english. you, my friend, are a victim of the PC brigade gone mad... its people like you that cause problems by objecting when someone describes you by a slightly different adjective to what you want to be called. life is too short.
ZootHornRollo, it would probably be better for you, and less offensive for others, if you learn a bit more, before spouting off as you have above. Your outburst above only serves to embarrass yourself by your ignorance.

i was born in scotland, raised in scotland and live in scotland. but i don't kick off at everyone who calls me british.
But you wouldnt want anyone calling you english would you, just because england is the country beside you?
The majority of us here in northern ireland see ourselves as part of the UK, and not part of the irish republic.0 -

Gee, if we'd had you over here in the 1970's we could all have saved ourselves so much trouble.
If only we'd thought.
Or, maybe you're commenting on a situation you neither understand nor have taken the time to find out about, before 'giving your opinion'.0 -

it would help more if you did not jump on a perfectly innocent use of the word irish to describe someone based on the island of Ireland. someone from n. ireland could just as easily take offense at being called British so really this is pointless arguement.
maybe you could enlighten me as to what a neutral term would be to describe both irish and british citizens of northen ireland and i shall be sure to use it constantly so as not to cause offense. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -

a completely different point all together.
the British mainland is not called England. its called Great Britain.
100% of northern irish people i know refer to themselves as irish - and two of them were raised as protestants! The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -

or maybe you are taking this a little bit too far.
my point is that in order that when we write or speak people can understand what we are talking about, we need to use adjectives in order that we can differentiate between different objects/people/places etc etc. what one person finds offensive another probably won't. stop being a !!!! about it.The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -

Great opinion poll survey then on your part, eh? Three of my mates have said they're irish therefore i must be right. If the three of your friends have a nationalist stance, then yes, i am sure it would suit them to describe themselves as 'irish'. Or maybe they've got tired of correcting peoples ignorance to the situation?
Bemusingly, so strong is the national identity in scotland, that you've got your own parliament and there would be a strong percentage of scots who would want independence, however when we here in northern ireland try to correct a statement made in ignorance by you (whether that be those here in NI who affiliate ourselves with ireland or those who affiliate ourselves with the UK) to place Belfast in the correct country of Northern Ireland, then we're 'being stupid'.
I see this as no different than you, from scotland, being incorrectly described as 'english' by someone ignorant of the situation.0
