Selling UK Car on eBay - Irish buyer

Hi,

I am selling my car on ebay for less than £1000 buy it now with best offer. I am UK based - East coast of scotland to be a little more precise.

I have had a best offer that is a little lower than i am willing to accept, it is from a buyer whose post code is based in Belfast.

before i enter into negotiations, should i be at all suspicious?

is this likely to be some kind of a scam or is it normal for people in n. ireland to buy 10 year old cars from mainland UK?

  • Surely distance wise its not much different than someone in the south of England being interested in buying it? Perhaps its because I am from Belfast myself that I can't understand why you would be particularly suspicious of someone from Northern Ireland being interested. If its a make/model of car that someone specifically wants I could see them wanting to travel over on the boat to collect it. Just confirm where the person is though, it could be that it is a University student from Northern Ireland who is at University somewhere in Scotland.

    Thats a fair point!

Is there any way i can contact the potential buyer via ebay? i could not see the option.

it is not a particulary common car but then its not really what you would describe as a sought after model either... its an estate car! :)

If you click on their name (where the bid is if they have bid) you should get an option to the left of the page to "Contact Buyer" (or seller... gah, forgot the term!)

  • there is not link to allow me to contact the 'buyer'.

I guess its ebays way of detering off site dealings.

  • My husband bought his car of ebay about 3 years ago and we live in N Ireland and the car was in England. He went over looked at the car and handed the money over then, of course he had been in contact with the seller after he won the auction. He still has the car, never been a problem with it ( touch wood)

we live in Scotland and bought a car from the Isle of Wight . No problems so no need to be suspicious x

  • the car sold to someone else.

I made a counter offer to the Irish buyer but no reply after 12 hours during which someone else offered me the same as my counter offer.

they are also traveling to collect but from the mainland.
