I have worn glasses for 50+ years and have been wearing varifocals for 20 or so years now.
I have looked at the cheap specs industry and decided that I will stay with the optician that knows me, knows my eyes, will send me to a specialist because he thinks the pressure is a bit high in my eyes, will take photos because he thinks I have the early signs of macular degeneration and he wants to be aware of any possible further deterioration. If too many people just use these 'real' opticians for the odd sight test then they will vanish the way of all independent specialists.
Cheap is not always best, I pay about £300 for my thin lensed varifocals but I wear them everyday for about 3 years, so about £2 a week and I get wonderful service. I have them adjusted as often as I need, have had new arms and nose pieces when I have broken them completely free.
I have seen the specs dispensed to members of my family by the high street chains. Most have been poorly fitting, leaving huge grooves on noses and behind ears and would be uncomfortable to wear for any length of time.
Still each to their own, I will continue to buy my expensive ones for as long as I can but realise this is not for everyone.0 -
I'm sure most of you savvy moneysavers wont buy glasses at D&A in the high street, but I am going to be doing so for various reasons, and I just found a voucher on their website for 1/2 price eye test and 10% off glasses - see http://www.danda.co.uk/promotions/
Apologies if this is old news, I didn't have time to trawl the thread and it didn't come up on a quick search.0 -

You can do better than that if you haven't been to D&A for last two years:

I have tired to buy glasses on the internet before but of 8 or 9 sites i tried only one would do my prescription, even then they insisted on charging twice the list price and when they finally arrived they fell apart in less than a week. bit of superglue though and they've been good for 2 years now.
Only in the last few months has one of the 'make in an hour' chains arrived in my town until then it was something I had to do in t'city. Which would be fine. Except they had to order my lenses anyway so I had to wait a week, without glasses as well!.0 -
Two of my Tesco Extra's now have opticians and the guy in one of them said to expect 200 within a year. Pricing is easy to understand (frame, lense, extras) and they are running introductory offers giving 2 for the price of 1 including varifocals. The values frames start at £20 including single vision lenses (free) and scratch resistant coating (free). Basic varifocal lenses are £45.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

I need a new pair of high prescription specs (-9.00) and would like to check the frames in store before buying. I'm going to the US next month and wondered if anyone had any experience in buying there? Also, will they accept UK prescriptions?
I was thinking of trying: http://www.pearlevision.com , http://www.lenscrafters.com or

A few years ago I bought Spex in the States, they were fine, took 2 days to sort out. However that was before I discovered internet shopping0 -
I recently had my eyes tested, there is a slight deficency in my distance sight. I was advised that spectacles for this were optional rather than essential but they would for example increase my enjoyment of television orf cinema. For my near sight I need spectales with a ADD +1.5
I have ordered a cheap standard pair from Budgetspex for everyday use for the moment. I sit in front of a computer screen for many hours of the day and feel perhaps I need to buy another pair specifically for this purpose. Budgetspex offer VDT or EVA tints, I need some advice on which one (if any) to go for?
