    When I missed them they did another delivery the next day.

    I invested in a Hippobox to stop these delivery problems. Usually try to get things delivered to work, but got fed up of coming home to cards through the door if something I wasn't expecting didn't fit through the letterbox. It's basically a metal box you bolt to the wall outside, and the delivery driver can put the goods inside and lock the door. There's even a barcode and pin number inside so he can get a POD.
