  • I think driving assessments should be compulsory every, say, five years and that any driving convictions should be taken into acount when the assessment is carried out. But then they would surely pass the cost of that onto us all.
I certainly think everyone over the age of 70 should have to re-take a test of some kind periodically. Not just on the driving, but on the highway code as well. It's amazing how much it's changed in the last 20 odd years, but I wonder how many people bother to re-read an updated version once they've passed their test. [Sorry, saddo here did, when T/S was learning to drive a couple of years ago.]

We were at the point of having to wrestle Dad's driving licence from him (he's 83) when he had two minor strokes and so was forced to stop for at least 6 months. Even he acknowledges that he'll probably not get his licence back.
Bad driving should be as socially unacceptable as drink driving IMO.
I was quite naughty and contacted my father's GP at one point - to tell the GP that my father was prone to passing out when he had a coughing fit. Quite frankly, the thought of my father passing out on the local dual carriageway and possilby taking out several other people in the process terrified me, even it the possibility never occurred to my father.

He did that OAP driving thing about everything being done very slowly, including pulling out into traffic
His thinking time also before reacting to something would probably be in the order of 5 minutes.
The trouble with my father was that he'd not adjusted his driving, and was still driving very aggressively (in fact, he'd become more aggressive as his health deteriorated). He did in the end give up driving, but he'd continued driving long after he should have stopped.

Ouch, much sympathy. I hope it sorts itself out soon.

  • Don't want to worry you unnecessarily, mummy, but has anyone investigated the possiblity of gulf war syndrome? Sadly, I know more about it than I'd wish to, but it might be that your husband has been wrongly diagnosed.

Has O/H been referred to a rheumatologist or a neurologist? I think they'd be better able to assess your O/H's condition, to be honest.
O/H didnt serve in the gulf but did serve in Bosnia someone at Royal British Legion did say about uranium but havent really looked into it that much, we will certainly mention it to neurologist at next appointment.
  • I've often, just out of interest, taken the on-line written part of the driving test just to see how I would do and was quite diappointed by results. However, I consistently got questions wrong about braking distances etc and I could never remember those, but am extremely careful to leave a sufficient gap between me and car ahead when driving. Doesn't stop someone pulling into it though!

Thanks s/e. Neck will be fine by tomorrow if I do all the right things.

Mummy, is there an association for ex-Army members with medical problems? Not sure how net savvy you are - would you like me to look and see if I can find anything?

Unity, sorry you had a bad night. Nightmares sometimes have an emotional effect on you the next day so I'm pleased you have such a supportive OH. Lots of cuddles are on the prescription from Dr Axe!
Just opened a parcel sent from pal in Solihull and has 3 fat books that look right up my street in it. Know what I'm going to be doing the rest of the day!
And had decided to have a look in TKMaxx tomorrow and have managed to pick a mystery shop for the car park I would need to park in anyway! £12 in the bin thank you very much. Good stuff!
I must go, I have lives to ruin and hearts to break :D

Ah, that's just triggered what might be a useful memory. Mummy, are you in contact with SSAFA (I think, I'll just go and have a google). If not, they might also be helpful.

    Thankyou

JUst had a quick look online and have found out about something called Balkan syndrome , not much research on it at moment but symtoms seem to be same as Gulf war syndrome. looking at the description of Gulf war syndrome alot of the symptoms are screaming out at us, exactly the same as my O/H has.
Americans seem to have more research on this link between servicemen and FMS ( why am i not surprised UK has nothing) but we will also be contacting Royal British Legion again who have been a great help.
  • Here we go

Not sure what help they give, but certainly worth calling them to find out.

I think it comes down to what sort of experiences one's had in the past - and if you hadn't made your post about assistance for ex-servicemen, I'd never have remembered about SSAFA, so it comes down to being a joint effort in the end.

Which is what this thread is all about really, innit?

Ive been out visiting DS 1 and his family today, I had to drive there and back as DH had a hangover from last night  On the drive back I started getting really bad spasms in my lower back , I dont know how I managed to get home, I dont think I will try and do that drive by myself again.

I have the same problem as SE with my eyes, and cant drive when it gets dark because of the glare from other car headlights, I've thought of those glasses that cut out the glare but I've never seen them for sale anywhere, does anyone know where to get them from ?

Welcome Mummyof3boys, good luck on Thursday

    s/e I just wouldn't be me without self-deprecating throwaway one-liners.

Sue, raeh and pooh, I hope you are all taking things easy and recovering. It's a shame, suep, when a planned outing causes pain at the end, but I think if we didn't do things for fesr of the pain we would all go crazy. I think your OH is not the Messiah, just a very naughty boy :D:p

Will be watching the new Batman film tonight. Not a great fan of them, but watching mainly for Heath Ledger's last role. What a troubled man he seems to have been.

Got lots of things crossed off To Do list today even if they were only little things like "get milk". Tomorrow I must drag out my address book from where it has burrowed in and do Xmas cards.

I'm very grateful for all the hlp you've all offered me, but I think I may contact Dial about filling in my DLA form. I just can't manage to get my head round it and if I'm not proactive, it will get left again like it has so many times before
