    Jilld....

We have two freezers..but there are 6 of us in our house...I normally use it to freeze the reduced bread when we3 can get it..if not then its full of homemade..homegrown stuff....

a few years ago we lived in a small culdisac ( 6 houses) and we had a huge chest frezzer in the garage..most of the neighbours put their stuff in it...but when any of us saw reduced bread we brought it and put int he freezer and when one of us ran out of bread it was nipuin and pull out a loaf..(

prob need to say 4 of those houses had (three-4 kids each in fact there were 12 children in that culdisac all under 8 at the time..

That is such a good idea! I have been trying to keep some extra milk, butter and bread in the freezer over winter because I have a lot of elderly neighbours who don't get out often, especially with this weather. I love the idea of a 'community chest' (geddit?!), it's not something that I think would work round here, but it sounds great!

We have a large chest freezer, bought 25+ years ago when we moved here and have recently inherited a fridge-freezer from a neighbour. If I were more organised then I think I could usefully use both (extra bread and milk sounds a great idea). However, I am also guilty of freezing leftovers (without labels of course!) and then completely forgetting they're there! Maybe I need to make being organised with my freezer use a project for this year. Can't say we've noticed a noticeable rise in electricity consumption with the second model - but it was virtually new and A rated.

We haven't got room for a second freezer but MIL has one and we share (she only lives a couple of miles away and we see her all the time). I couldn't take advantage of special offers and reductions as much as I do without one.

    Runnings costs are important!
An old freezer could cost as much as £1 a day! = £400 a year
Modern efficient chest freezers could be just £30 a year

So don't struggle on with an old freezer when spending £200 on a new one gives you pay back in just over 6 months!

is lucky enough to have built up 2 freezers with meat etc ( through whoops ) but still buys meat and bits every week?

i think subconciously i am worried we won't be able to afford food one week and at least we have enough for maybe 3 weeks food. My OH thinks i am mad, and i probably am, but am i alone?

I never have less than a weeks worth of meals in, well I haven't for about 4 years anyway. I know it's because we've hit extremely hard times before. It's rare if I have space in both freezers.
One day I might be more organised...........
    GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb
  • I did have but then OH moved in and threw away most of what was in my freezer. It is a 20 cubic foot freezer too. All the banana's I had saved for making breads and cakes with, all the hedgerow fruit I had picked, most of the fish (especially coley) got cooked up for the cats. I can now see the bottom of my freezer which I haven't done in years and I feel so poor with an empty freezer which is weird but I know I don't have the money to fill it again :(
