Is it easy to get electric hooked up to the shed at the end of the garden? I'm getting jealous of people with second freezers and this would be the only place I can put one.

Oohh I never thought of doing this. We are always having to pop to corner shop for extra milk despite having a milkman. Does ordinary milk freeze and defrost ok?

I have a small chest freezer that I bought in Curry's about 14 years ago (should have been £169 but got for £109 as it was the display model) - don't think it had a 'rating' on it at the time. Definitely doesn't 'owe me anything'.

Only thing I've had a problem with was the hinges. They had to be replaced but the estimate that we got for somebody to come out and do it was ridiculous! Sent for the hinges and did it ourselves - think it cost £2.00 about three years ago.

When it finally dies I'm looking for the one that is double the size - but not the really huge one. There are only two of us and we don't grow our own veggies or anything like that. I also have a F/F with four drawers in the bottom half - and now don't know how I ever managed with just the chest freezer:confused: .

Hi, I have a chest freezer in my garage that we havent used for a few years. Would it be worth plugging it in and seeing if it still works. Am I likely to safe money by using it? I have a small freezer with my fridge/freezer but can fit much in it. What do you think?

Yes, I would. You could use it as a veggie store.
then when you see carrots etc on whoopsie you can buy loads of them, then chop them up and freeze them.
Check the power consumption though, old freezers use a lot more power than new ones.
If you decide not to use it put it on Freecycle.

Ive got a real old banger or a chest freezer in the barn. I got it off my mum about 7 years ago and they had had it for 15 years!!!!
It is great to have...means you can buy up loads of reduced items and freeze so it is money saving.
Dont think my freezer uses too much electricity but i suppose a new one would be more efficient..but buying a new one when my old banger is kicking along fine is not so OS lol

  • yes, you could make batches of food and freeze,

  • I don't know how I would cope without a freezer....I freeze leftovers that i wont use before they go off; i make batches of soup, stew etc and freeze them; i stew all the apples in autumn and freeze them so i cna eat them months later; I buy bread that's on its date, freeze it, and take out 2 slices each day to eat; and i buy things on offer eg two for one, and freeze the spares.

i save soooo much on food by using the freezer.

We have two upright freezers and they save us a fortune. There is only OH and myself at home now but having so much freezer space means that I take up any special offers and make use of free food.

    I have in my freezer:

    Reduced yellow sticker veggies
Free food (blackberries, apples, plums, rhubarb, rosehips, sloes etc)
Left over meals in one person portions (for packed lunches)
One person portions of soup (I batch cook soups for lunches)
Lots of pork (I bought 1/4 of a pig)
    Pheasants and ducks
Buns and cakes for packed lunches
    Home made pies and crumbles
    Left over cooked turkey
Cheese (bought large blocks and cut into more useable sizes)
Bags with two slices of HM bread in (ready to take out for sandwiches)
    etc. etc. etc.

I've also in the past frozen reduced milk and cream.
Enjoying an MSE OS life :D
