  • British officials return to Iceland over frozen money

LONDON (AFP) — A British delegation will make a fresh visit to Iceland to finalise a compensation deal for British savers with money frozen in the accounts of a stricken bank, the finance ministry said Tuesday.
Following discussions between Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling and Icelandic Prime Minister Geir Haarde, "officials from the Treasury and Bank of England are going to Iceland to work on finalising an agreement that aims to compensate UK depositors and ensure fair treatment for creditors", a statement said.
No date was given for the trip.
The freezing of thousands of British-held accounts following the collapse of Icesave, a subsidiary of Landsbanki, came close to provoking a diplomatic incident earlier this month.
A British delegation travelled to Iceland on October 10-11, with both sides reporting that progress had been made on the issue of compensation for British savers.
The government said last week it would provide a short-term loan of up to 100 million pounds (129 million euros, 169 million dollars) to Landsbanki to help repay cash to British savers.

Martin, why are you fuelling these premature protestations? Surely you should be the voice of reason.

I do hope I am being reasonable. We are in unprecedented times, Icesave has moved off the news agenda. We had hoped the info would come last week, it didn't we are now told it should come this week.

I hope and expect it will. Yet as time moves on people have a legitimate expectation to know and understand the procedure. lack of info causes uncertainty and distress.

My aim is first of all to try and show people what the score is - and to try and act as a more organised conduit if people need to protest. Fingers crossed as I have written above, that won't be needed.

I would go to London but with the lost funds can't afford to. It might surprise some, but just because someone has savings and pays their way in life, doesn't mean they are wealthy. In fact, in relative terms many on state benefits have a better standard of living than a fool like me who has worked hard and gone without. I think there is a lesson here.

    Absolutely.
My attitude to life work and money will never be the same after this shower of crap.

I am happy (listenting to views here) to organise something, and get permits if needed and do press releases (will need casestudies but am sure many of you will oblige). I have a PR team and we can work on this.

If the protest doesn't work, would you be willing to follow up on my previous suggestion and organise for us to take a trip to Iceland to collect our money in person? If they haven't got the money then I'm willing to take my payment in cod. :D

I agree, but also, i have a fundamental lack of trust in this opportunist media savvy government.
They need to be held to their word.
    Thanks for your involvement.

Similar for me - it has made me much more risk averse. You don't know how important access to your money is until you don't have it!
  • I certainly agree, if nothing happens by 6/7 nov., we should make our feelings known. So count us two in as part of the 500.
