Could I ask, if you were to buy the phone from Amazon, put the T-mobile card in to use the £5 credit. Would you then need to unlock the phone to put in anyother Sim card? I ask as from what I have read Amazon send the phone unlocked.

Sorry if this is a daft question.

Yes, use the credit on the sim card, then chuck it and use your own sim.

In general, there's no guarantee when you send off for a PAYG mobile whether it will be locked or unlocked when it arrives. Sometimes, when you would expect it to be locked, it turns out to be unlocked - but you might just have hit lucky and other people ordering the same phone might end up with their's being locked.

I would say that you should always assume that the phone you send off for will be locked unless there are lots of people ordering the same phone from the same source and they all confirm that their's is unlocked. If the phone you are sending off for is easily unlocked for free (such as the Nokia 1100 - and most other Nokias) then it's no big deal and it's just a case of "suck it and see" - if it comes unlocked, then great - if not, then just unlock it yourself (with a little help from Browntoa or Drahcir or others, who hang out in the unlocking thread);)

Don't forget, you can always exercise your rights under the Distance Selling Regulations and send the phone back if it's not what you wanted (although you could end up being hit for the return postage cost)

Thank you both for your help.
  • £17.99 is very good of course, but for only £9.99 you can get the same thing at Carphone Warehouse. If you have an old phone to trade in (inc charger & instruction booklet) you get £10 off the £19.99 standard price (with Orange PAYG). You have to buy a minimum £5 Orange top-up, but once that's used up you can replace with your preferred SIM card and carry on as before - no 'phone unlocking' required. In fact a helpful manager at a CW branch suggested this whole method to me - it's not a secret.
In this way I was able to replace my trusty Nokia 3310 (which needed a new battery costing £24.99) and an embarrassingly old Eriksson phone with 2 new, light and very convenient phones.
Hope this helps someone out there...
