Sky Box Help

I think my sky box has just died.
I turned channel and it got stuck, because of the bad weather.
I turned it off at the wall and it won't turn back on again. It's on the red stand-by button and it won't turn on via the remote or the actual box.
Is it possible the weather won't allow it to be turned back on? I doubt it as it's always turned back on before.
Is there anywhere I can buy a new box and just put it in place of the seemingly dead one, or do I have to get someone out to install it?
Thanks

There are plenty for sale on that well known online auction site.
It does sound as if your receiver may well be stuffed.
Replacement is just a matter of changing the cables over like for like with a replacement receiver, if you subscribe to Sky you will just need to contact Sky to have your card matched to the new box.0 -
a sky guy came to see us and replaced my box with a refurbished model.
The visit const £65 which included the box.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Just had a look at the well known auction site...may have to do that.
Is that then easy to call SKY and tell them to align the new box? What details will they want?
Was thinking maybe upgrading to Sky Plus if I have to get Sky out, depending on what deals they have.
Have a freeview box to see us through a few days, but not the sameEspecially for fuming flatmate!

the current deal is £75 for a sky+ box... which should be a brand new box, rather than a refurb standard box...
only til the end of the month iirc

!
I didn't say that the box needed aligning, I said that the card would need activating in the new box, just a phone call to Sky.0 -

How long did you leave the box switched off for? If only briefly I would try pulling the plug out for 2 or 3 minutes then put the plug back in and wait for another minute or so before trying to switch on via remote.0 -
markymoo - Is that inclusive of installation, or would I have to pay more?
Inactive - Yeah, sorry, I meant activate card to new box. I must have been thinking 'satellite aligning' when I posted
Onzey - I left it for a 2 or 3 minutes. Then I forgot about it as was getting ready to go out and tried one more time (about 30 mins later) and it worked again.
Come back, still working. Either way, it sounds like it's on it's way out (had it 9 years, no problems!) Will seek out one on eBay as a replacement for when this one finally dies full stop!0 -
My original box used to lock up now and again too. Still works though.
Not sure it's necessarily a sign of imminent death. Yours could well last another 9 years!0 -
No its not dead, but you have to hold down the power on button at the front for 30secs after switching on at the mains. This puts into factory reset, if you cant work it then ring sky, as they will know the exact combination for your sky boxMy Mind wanders, if found please return.0

Think I will get a backup anyway. The 20 odd quid on eBay is well worth saving me have my ears chewed off my the TV loving flatmate
It's working for now anyway, so here's hoping it survives at least until the replacement arrives!0
