I was reading a brochure in the Doctors Surgery last week.........it was advice for pensioners this winter.

Although i'm far from being an OAP, i have this week taken heed of its advice.......i've set the gas boiler thermostat at 18 degrees during the day, and 21 degrees at night (if especially cold).

Hopefully this will help a little towards my future gas bill........as before i was running the heating at 25 degrees!!

21 degrees at night - isn't that a bit over the top? Have you got it the wrong way around? To be honest, if I was leaving my heating on overnight I wouldn't be comfortable with it so hot - don't you think about 15 or 16 degrees at night would be enough?

Haven't done too well with the electricity this week - 143 units (were aiming for 104). My OH hasn't been well this week, so I think we've had the electric fire on more than usual. And I've been working flat out to meet a deadline this morning, so I've been drinking coffee every hour or so to try to keep going - I think I need to go cold turkey now!

Edited to say - just realised I misread the meter, and it was 123 not 143, so not as bad as I thought! Got the kettle back on now!

I've had a minor disaster - the gas meter is outside in a meter box, and last week I can't have closed it quite well enough, because it blew open in the wind last weekend, and the hinges on the door have broken. Luckily you can buy new hinges for a few pounds and they've turned up today, but not a very moneysaving experience!
  • Last night I had the house to myself for three hours - a very unusual event ! Off with the tv, and all that paraphenalia. Me my book one side light and a few mugs of tea. Looking at the energy monitor this morning I've saved over 3 units compared to usual usage.
Gets me thinking how easily the telly is to 'use'. Few games of chess or the like may be be called for over winter.

Added to that I've worked out that we spend £3 a day on electricity, that's a £1 each, sounds so trivial. If I couuld just get it down to £2 a day I'd be happier.

  • Right my reading for this week is 57529, which is 123 units, which although is up on last week (95 units), I think this is a more realistic reading. I had to use the tumble dryer, dishwasher went on only once on a quick wash as it was smelling and needed rinsing through, I ironed last week and had oven on twice. So even though it is up, it is still way down on original week which was 195 units:eek: . Am going to try and bring this down again this week and would like to be nearer the 100 unit mark, so need to keep the gang on their toes!!

Also have read the gas meter and the reading is 6493, so will see what we use in a usual week and then try and reduce that also.

I forgot to do my readings at 12 last night, had a drunken idiot on my hands :D

    Electric 76550 (i've used 95 units)
    Gas 409 (i've used 62)

Well I mean big business this week now!! Everything is getting switched off unless we are using them, no lights getting left on, heating only getting put on a couple of hours in the morning and at night, going to invest in some curtains when I get paid. :D

  • ok - 4 hours late but hopefully not much difference

    Original reading 28111
    reading 8/11 - 28180 (69 units)
    week 3 - 28241

So 61 units this week! I set myself a target of 60, so not bad.

Right, I will hit 60 next week, although again, not sure where I can trim from!
