  • Good afternoon
So 7 days later. meter reading is 4171, (thought I took reading on the 4th but it was the 3rd) so that's 125 units.
    Right then let battle commence.

  • Oh dear

My reading for this week is 1087 which, compared with last week's 969 equals 118 units. That's rubbish!! Am up by two units.

Right, that's it, sleeves are rolled, lights are out.

A quick question for you all.
What would be cheaper/more energy efficient? Having the heating on low for 2/3 hrs on an evening or turning thermostat up a bit and only having it on for an hr? My OH thinks the latter of the 2 and keeps cranking up the temp. Must admit this morn we tried it and only had to have heating on for 40mins and house stayed toasty for ages. What do you think?

nickynoo08 - I see what tyllwyd's getting at and it makes sense, but my quick way of saying my thoughts is: If you're talking about one room and (say) you have a heater with settings 1 - 10 on it, then you'd be better off having it on No 1 for maybe 2/3 hours than on No 2 for 1hour. To my mind, it's better to have it on low and constant for the evening, then turn it off about an hour before you leave the room for the night. A short, sharp burst will soon cool down again, especially at times when the door's opened to go to the loo/make a cuppa etc.

Good luck and keep warm, but not overly.

  • I must admit I like to whack it up for a couple of hours and then turn it off completely. I find that this is enough to take the chill off the air quickly and also is long enough to keep the house warm for the rest of the evening. I think I will measure it though and see what the difference is in units used. Did this yesterday - put heating on at 30 at 2pm, turned it off at 3.30pm and it hasn't gone back on at all. But if it was sitting at, say, 20 would have gone on at 2pm and stayed on until about 10 last night.

Thanks - sue-uu - that was my thinking too, but think we might try it after yesterday morning tho. Our rads stayed really warm for ages after i turned the heating off.

Right its been a week, so here goes. My first reading was 51995 and my new reading is 52092 so that means i've used 97 units which is roughly £11.64 (according to my tarriff), a bit worrying as i only pay £25 a month dd!! Now the fun starts. I've kept a few quid spare for me and OH today so we're off into town and i'm gonna 'treat' him to a coffee and some free heating and newspaper. Got washing to do today so will stick it on quick wash instead.

Ok now to start my gas readings. My first reading is 7992. Again i'll leave everything gas related as is this week and i'll update in 7 days. I think i must be using less gas than i thought cuz we've just had £71 back from our previous supplier, but we'll see.

Thats what i mean. at the moment its not too bad but in a few weeks its gonna be really cold and like most we just cant afford to pay anymore thats why i'm trying to figure out what works out cheaper. Think i'm gonna try it one way for one week then the other and see how it affects my reading.

  • Hi all

Reading for this week is 02128 so that makes my weekly total 92 units so a bit more than last week (when I was at home for half term) but still less than first week - note to self - must make more effort!!!

I've been thinking about this a bit more, and I think the bit that people aren't taking into account is the thermostat. If you turn your heating right up, let it cool down, then turn it back on, then effectively what you are doing is acting as a human thermostat. If you left the heating on at, say 18 degrees, the boiler won't be on the whole time, it will heat up until the thermostat measures the right temperature, then it will turn off and let things cool down, then turn itself back on again and so on.

    Aaarrggghhh we are getting worse!!!!

    Readings today
    Rate 1: 123 used this week 87
    Rate 2: 13 used this week 10

We only used 51 rate 1 units last week.

My husband is at home after an operation so he has the tv on nearly all day so I suspect that is where the extra is coming from.

Must get him to try other things such as reading or Sudoku!!
