DVD rental providers feedback

  • I've been using them or a year and they have been excellent. One DVD broke when we opened the box, and one was lost in the post - both were re-sent without any problem. Have used the 9.99 for 6 per month and that has been plenty. Very easy to change or cancel package. You also get 10% discount off dvd purchases which has been excellent for xmas presents - saved about £10 this month.

I rent all my DVDs from my local Library £2 per week, cheaper for children's titles.
  • Not sure if this is a general rule or not but the 21 day free trial on ScreenSelect includes return of the last DVDs within the 21 day period. I cancelled my account on the 20th day and posted off the DVDs but was charged for the next month as they didn't receive them back on the 21st day.

I tried arguing that if it is a 21 day trial you should get the use of all 21 days but they wouldn't back down. I used the paid "month" for two weeks and have just cancelled 2 weeks early just in case the DVDs are held up in the post!

Ive been with Amazon quite a while now, and they are fantastic at sending movies out.

I have had no problems with them at all, and I think Im very lucky to recieve my DVDs the day after they are sent out, without fail.

Ide give them 10 out of 10 for service. :)
  • I had been the Tarts of Tarts over 12-18 months. I've even managed to get more than one free trial from both Lovefilm and Blockbusters, no success with Screenselect ......
Now I'm paying my way and I must confess, I'm happy to do so, as I truly feel I'm getting value for money!!!
However, over the last 6 months or so, I've discovered it does not pay to be loyal-even when paying full price.
You find at first, you are treated to a first class, super fast service(turning round 6 dvd's a week,on a 3 disc unlimited option)That soon begins to slow after the first month or so.
So what do I do.I have found skipping from rental company to rental company is the best way to ensure a fast, efficient turnaround of dvd's.As a new customer your are always treated to a 1st class service.

Once they feel they have you hooked the service goes down hill.
So don't just be a trial tart!!!!Be a rental company tart!!!!!
It doesn't pay to stay loyal to one comany!!!!!

I'm with Amazon and am very happy with them. They have a good choice of films & I've rented some really obscure stuff. A couple of DVDs got lost in the post (I do find it strange that they use envelopes with 'DVD' written all over them!) and they were replaced straight away.

The other thing I like about Amazon is that subscribers to the rental scheme get 10% off any DVD purchases they make.

We use Blockbusters and pay £14.99 a month for unlimited three at a time DVDs. I worked out that we would have to rent at least five a month to break even on the shop prices, and so far we have managed that. However the enthusiasm is wearing thin and sometimes the DVD sits around for a few weeks because not everyone wants to watch it, there's something better on telly etc... We seem to be borrowing fewer titles as time goes by and it might be cheaper to just rent them from the shop.

Blockbusters have been fine in my experience, my only gripe is that they have stopped using rigid plastic carriers and now put them in flimsy card pockets. Since they did this the incidence of damaged discs has increased.

I have been with Blockbusters for over a year now on their unlimited '3 at a time' DVD package (and since some kind soul posted a discount code I only pay £13.50 a month for the privilege!).

I have had no major snags with their service, though a few DVD's have gone missing after I posted them back (they have always been quick to sort it out though) and find that my I tend to get at least 4 or 5 of my top ten choices a month.

Overall not a bad service and I find them better than Screen Select who I was with before.

    turnaround great

    no problems with any dvds

    blockbuster

i'm 3/4 way through free trial

    not so good

turnaround very slow compared to whsmith (i've got less than half no. of dvds than at this time with whsmith)

i've had 1 dvd go missing.....and two dvds that jumped most of the way through

all in all blockbuster no where near as good as whsmith

Heres a list of current DVD rental companies on the net, all offer free trials. Collectively there is months worth of free trials, although you have to be disciplined and change/cancel within the time frame.

There used to be a whole lot more but screenselect have swallowed up a great deal of smaller firms operating on the net.

Tarting is definitely worth it if you have changed from sky (or down subbed from their movie package) to a more economical Freeview. I am on my third DVD rental provider :)

just a word of caution with that list, make sure that one company isnt actually another one under a different name, for example sainsburys is run by lovefilm. if so you will only get a free trial with one of those and not both!! its always worth checking before signing up because they're buying out each other all the time and you might end up with a bill.

i'm a true dvd rental tart by heart, alas not this month though because i got caught out with not cancelling in time. blockbuster have managed to get me paying for a month but i got 13 dvds within my first month so cant really complain.

my recommendations for fantastic turnaround and good quality of dvds go to screen select and blockbuster. ive had both their trials twice (moved house and changed credit card for the second times) and both times been excellent.
