I agree with raeble - they are clearly in breach of the sale of goods act. Not fit for purpose - there is no length of time written into law, but if a part fails that could be expected to last longer then you are entitled to a repair or replacement.
Phone your local CAb - trading standards are crap where I live - they are a bloody call centre themselves!!!0 -
ok this is what i would do........
Call apple again, explain your problem if they say the same again, tell them you are not happy with the outcome and want the name and address of the Mananging Director (by law they have to give you this).
The write a letter explaing whats happened and how unhappy you are, Post this letter Recorded delivery will cost 98p, and i bet you, he will get it changed for you.
Always worked in the past for me, when i have got no where with companies.
Good Luck

Guys, have had a closer look at the now non-functioning ipod, whilst not damaged on the outer screen you can see a "line" running diagonally within the screen.
Our son says he never dropped it or hit it against anything and also had it in his pocket, all day, not sure if it was trouser or jacket, neverthelsss the item is a "portable" piece of equipment and it should be safe to carry during your normal working day.
Ergo it stands to reason that the item was not made to a sufficient standard to with stand every day usage or wear and tear, ie it should not break.
Might try contacting the MD method too!
Will phone them again and try relevant Trading Standards and Citizens advice bureau offices, will report back, thanks to all.0 -
I also have a faulty ipod, my one is 5 months old. If I'd known how unreliable these things were I would never have bought them.
This is the fourth one we've had, one was delivered faulty by Apple and fully refunded, one was repaired by Apple and one was OK. THis one is from ebuyer and has had on and off problems for the past couple of months. No screen problems though in my case, it's just the thing locks up and can't be reset or charged or anything.
It's going back to ebuyer tomorrow alhtough I have a horrible feeling they won't do anything with it.
There was an article on watchdog a couple of months ago about the new Ipods having faulty screens. You can read part of the report here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/watchdog/reports/consumer/consumer_20050920.shtml
or another report here:
http://www.aviransplace.com/index.php/archives/2005/09/28/apple-responds-to-ipod-nano-screen-concerns/
The problem with faulty screens seems to be well known, but Apple don't appear to treat us UK buyers as well as US ones and will refuse to replace or repair.
Good luck if dealing with Apple. I have spent many a happy hour, or several.. arguing with them on the phone. They are really the nicest guys to talk to, those lovely irish accents, but it is like talking to a broken record, they commiserate and just refuse to do anything.

Easiest way is to go to ARGOs buy exactly the same model from them, wait a week and take the broken one back to them and they will refund you straight away,no hassle as a good shop should do

And thats fraud, so when Argos send it back to Apple they will know by the serial number that Argos never sold it and they wont get there money back0 -
Argos route aint open anyways!! As he got it specially inscribed on the back ( an offer open to internet purchases) with a typical teenage "cool" phrase to show to his mates, so not only have they got the serial number, but the unique inscription, plus his finger prints and no doubt a hair follicle or two to give him away to Dixon of Dock Green!!
Apple wont be getting a xmas card be assured!
Will feedback as to how we get on, thanks!0 -
Oh yes, the screen problem was to do with the ipod nano, caused quite stir at the time ( literally weeks after its launch, in the media for weeks it was) and Apple relented and replaced those, but are not offering the same option with the standard ipod.0
