  • Has anyone noticed how if something of value or unusual gets offer such as telly, xbox, caravan, car etc. After it has gone there are always loads of posts asking for one. Do these people genuinely need one? Its as if they see something listed and then decide they want one.

hi all,i joined freecycle about a month ago,its been a godsend to me,due to my metal bed collapsing a few years ago,(being propped up with books ever since)i was really thankful to the lady who posted the offer of a bed,it was my first time on freecycle and i was totally stunned when i heard back from her to ask me when i would like to collet the bed,we made arrangements for collection and she was a very nice lady, and the bed was beautiful,i have only just posted my first item to offer someone today, but already i feel good,as im helping in some way, freecycle is a helping hand to many people,i imagine there are those who abuse it,but they are far outnumbered by the genuine people who give with a good heart,

Lovely to hear when people have a good experience!

I notice that on my local freecycle people have started being silly and asking for cars - they even specify the make and model they want and the registration plate (it beggars belief)

As a Moderator for Freecycle, i'm surprised that your Moderator even let that through!
We get Offers for cars as well as Wanteds for them.... but to go as far as the Number Plates.... Well!

I think if you clearly state you want it collected on a certain day, that only people that can collect it on that day, should respond.
Or if they want to offer your items a home, but can not collect on the day you requested, they should say that they could only collect on X day.

When I offer stuff on Freecycle, I always ask people to clearly state what day/time they can collect or the day I want it collected on. At the end of the day, they are getting something for free.

I delete emails that are rude as I rather take it to the charity shop instead.

please please please dont take it the tip. theres charities around who will collect for free and will get put to good use. they collect when they say they will and it will go to help people who are homeless and in need. it seems a shame to tip a perfectly good piece of furniture.

im not sure where you're based but i see you're cornwall. heres a link to a charity in exeter for starters. if they cant collect. im sure they'll know another charity that will in your area.

this is what i do when freecycle doesnt work out.

  • Last week I was lucky enough to be given a baby walker on freecycle, which I really need for my baby and as I've been made redundant couldn't afford to buy. I was shocked when I collected it as the lady told me, within half an hour of advertising it she had 23 requests - and the reason she choose me I was the only one who said please.

I was one of the first members of freecycle in my area but am considering not bothering any more this weekend just gone I offered a large bag of books had a few replies but most were a little bit suspect to say the least i.e.
    1. I can collect today can i have your address
    2. what condition are the books in
    3. are we talking about boot sale amounts
If I wanted the books to be sold i would do it myself I just wanted people to have the pleasure that I have had from them whilst not using landfill not for others to make a profit or to be so grasping. Unfortunatly I feel that there are some on the groups who are out to exploit and as such do tend to put off genuine peeps. The books went to the charity shop in the end as i just couldnt be asked to sift through the lies
