I think it's a real shame that you weren't able to give a bit more notice, as most p;eople who want things on freecycle can't easily organise a van to collect a bed in less than 24 hours!

I have offered a lot on freecycle and yes, sometimes people muck us around, but more often than not we have given stuff to really grateful people and avoided adding to a landfill.

We have also received things as well and personally, even with it's flaws, I think freecycle is well worth doing :)

I hope you won't give up and have another go next time you have something you can pass on!

  • It aint perfect but its free!
And 'expecting' collection within 24 hrs is ridiculous.
You have to 'give' a bit,cos life aint just for you.
    Ive had free! tv's,swivel chairs,an ali ladder,and no they werent 'perfect',but very servicable,thank you.:j
And Ive given stuff away that we didnt need, but other's obviously did.
    :D :T

in my group you have to have offered something before you can put a wanted up, it might not be the same everywhere tho
Man who run into airport turn-styles is going to Bangkok

To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research ;)

oh, and normally, it's just 'wanted: (whatever you want)' or the same but offered, and you have to put area as well in the offered, even if it's just your home town

lookoutapiano : A lot of Freecycles want members to post an Offered first (as has been said) Ours does not.
Just make sure when you post a message it starts with the words WANTED or OFFER etc. and then the item itself. Some strict 'cycles will not even post a message if it doesn't start with that ....they'll just Delete it!!

For an offer, if you put your general location in as well, that gives potential respondents an idea of how far they would have to travel to get to you.

Ours does not let members post a phone numbers to the board directly for safety issues. And animal posts are not allowed either. Others let you do both.
You'll get a list of the rules when you join anyway.

Ive never had anything of use off freecycle in 2 years Ive had a broken rotary iarer and broken baby swing! nothing I offer gets taken its as though people only want things they can sell on. I put some xmas decs on and the person turned up and said oh is that it?

i do find a lot of things are gone as soon as they are posted and Ive heard that some mods take the items before approving the posts
Wins so far this year: Mum to be bath set, follow me Domino Dog, Vital baby feeding set, Spiderman goody bag, free pack of Kiplings cakes, £15 love to shop voucher, HTC Desire, Olive oil cooking spray, Original Source Strawberry Shower Gel, Garnier skin care hamper, Marc Jacobs fragrance.

All messages get put to the board for ALL members to see. We are all in the same boat when it comes to asking for something on offer. We email the Offerer saying 'yes please' and the offerer then chooses who gets the item from all the emails requests they receive.
No Moderator gets first pickings!....At least I don't.....maybe i'm doing something wrong.....

I'm a fan of Freecycle - I've got rid of things that really weren't good enough to sell but weren't bad enough to go to the dump - and I hope the recipients have enjoyed them. On the rare occasion no-one is interested in an item then it's obviously dump-worthy.

If you give something to someone on freecycle and then find out they've sold it elsewhere - then enjoy the fact that it didn't immediately go into landfill which is what it probably would have done if you hadn't freecycled it. I know I'd find it funny if something I'd given away on freecycle ended up on ebay - I'd know I'd done some very, very bad research.
