Go for it Jol - take it back to Tesco and ask sweetly for your money back. They'll oblige

Do you still have the receipt?

Hmmmm I bought one from Tesco too and had my pumpkin AND carved it... ;)
I too the seeds out the top and then used a spoon to get as much flesh as possible without weakening the walls too much. Then I stuck the flesh in a saucepan with enough veggie stock to just about cover it.
Boil gently till mushy and add 1 tsp of curry powder (I used mild but you could use whatever I guess). Season to taste and I bet you it tastes a lot better :)

  • My Pumpkin Plan -using 2 free pumpkins

1)On discovering that one had gone very soft I cut it up and threw the really soft mushy bit on the compost. The rest I peeled and cooked and made into muffins.

    2) The other pumpkin was fine so I scooped out the insides and threw away the seeds (I should have dried and eaten them..oops). I cooked the flesh and pureed it for the freezer.

    3) After the pumpkin had done its bit as a Halloween decoration I scraped away any candle burns and dripped wax (there wasn't any this time). I cut it up and peeled the skin off and cooked and pureed the rest of the flesh. There was loads of flesh and I think the heat from the candle made the peel easier to remove;) .

There are many varieties of pumpkin and they aren't all tasteless. Mine are lovely -bright orange and a good flavour. Try it and see.

    Are they like this:

That's Uchiki Kuri - I grew them last year, prolific crop, and they lasted well into the new year. Different growing conditions this year, and no crop.

They tasted delicious - great in risotto, pasta sauce, soup.

  • No, they weren't that orange Penny. The flesh was orangier than the skin.

Apparently growers have had a very bad harvest of pumpkin and winter squash because of the rain in the Summer. Maybe that has affected the flavour, I would imagine that long hot days are better for flavour than floods ;)

I had two. I agree some varieties are far better than others - but can't bear to waste the flesh (which work colleagues find really amusing  ). I made some soup, using cooked rice to thicken and adding some thai spice to give it a bit of a kick - it wasn't bad. With what I have left (quite a lot) I am going to do some chutney as we seem to be going through a lot at the moment. I'll add onions, apples, sultanas and some black onion seed.
  • i got mine from asda, lots were still a bit green, maybe still not ripe.
I was going to cook mine, got home from work to find step son and boyf had carved it already and chucked the fleash on to compost, but they kept the seeds don't know whether to pleant know if they won't taste nice

    Hi

I bought a pumpkin from Tesco and made soup out of the flesh and it was delicious. Maybe you just had a duff one:confused:

Oooh I'm so glad it isn't just my soup that tastes like .. well.. nothing edible!!

Is it salvagable or compost matter? hubby was quite excited about having pumpkin soup.. and our new zealand friend eats loads of them so it can't be all UK ones that are rank.

    ANy ideas?
