VW Touran ESP/ABS problems

• I have just purchased a 55 plate (registered December 2005) VW Touran 1.9 TDi with 77,000 miles on the clock from a Dealership (FLC Cars near Heathrow) I have owned the car 2 and half weeks from purchasing 2nd hand from the Dealership mentioned and today the ESP light has come on, and I cannot switch ESP back on - its on constantly.
I have been reading up and came across your posts (THANKS!)

What are my options? Am I able to pursue the Dealership or even maybe Manufacturer?

Do you have any tips and advice? Who should I contact and what should I say?

Any advice would greatly be appreciated!

Thanks,
David

I have recently bought a 1.9 Touran privately and was very pleased with it especially after it flew through its MOT last month, it is an ideal car for my young family. Now I have noticed that the ESP light has appeared as well as a symbol on the dash. I am now dreading that it is the ABS Pumps Modules problem that everyone here have been describing as I will not be able to afford the repair cost very easily. The car has high milage at 129k but surely if it is a common 'known' fault then i have a case with VW. What can i do. Is the car safe to drive otherwise?:(
Hi there, I was wondering how you got on with your touran? I have just joined the ''esp light on club'' although i have had my 53 plate touran only a couple of years, full service history (not VW when with previous owner) it has 120K on the clock, it seems futile to me to even pay for the VW computer check when i know that the car is way way out of claiming any loyalty or disgretion discount from VW. I have read through hundreds of forums on this fault but yours is the first one i found with an older high mileage car. Please tell me what happened next ?????

• Hi,

Firstly I'd like to thank everyone who has posted their experiences on here. We too have joined the 'Will never EVER buy a VW again' club. We bought our 07 VW Touran TDi in January 2009 with a mileage of 12902 miles.

All OK until June 2009, when the ignition started fizzing and sparking and the engine cut out. One AA call-out later and the VW garage replaced the ignition switch. Luckily under warranty.

August 2009, driving the car up a steep incline and suddenly the accelerator gave out. The engine was on, but the rev counter wouldn't go past about 20. Limped home, took it to our local independent, but they couldn't trace a problem. Bizarrely the problem went away so we didn't pursue it any further.

December 2010, we got what I now realise to be the all too common ESP warning light. We've been quoted £1000 by our independent garage to get it fixed. I am going to pursue this now with VW as I think it's a bit ridiculous since the car still only has 34,000 miles on the clock and is just 4 years old.

Also December 2010, the problem with the accelerator came back. You can't drive the car up a hill, there's no power even if you floor it. We've got it in this morning with our independent for diagnostics. I am dreading what they're going to come back with.

Question - do you think it is also worth pursuing this latter problem with VW?

Am gutted because we nearly bought a brand new Vauxhall at the time, and I thought we'd be better with a low-mileage 2nd hand VW because they're so reliable. Ha!

Anyway, thanks for any response, and I'm grateful for the information I've found here already.

Have you read any of the previous posts on here?

You can get goodwill from VW for replacing the ABS pump, and should cost you (hopefully) nothing. The accelorator issue I am guessing will be the air mass meter (£100), but your local independant will quite obviously not recommend you take your business elsewhere when he's quoted £1000 for the ABS pump (you can get a repair kit for £130, so he is looking to pocket nearly £900 for that job alone!!).

Hope that helps.

• Hi,

Thanks for your quick response. I have read every single one of these posts, but we've had a lot of bad luck with this car and I'd like to be armed with as much detail as possible before I talk to VW. Hence my request for any further info.

The accelerator problem has been diagnosed and we apparently require a new turbo at a cost of about £1400. So we've been quoted a total of £2,400 for two problems with a car that has done 34,000 miles and isn't yet 4 years old. Ugh!

thats not good get on to VW hopefully they should contribute a substantial % toward repair so long as service history is in order?

I take it you have the weak 2.0 tdi engine in yours?

No offence, but why are you trusting your local independant, when they are blatantly trying to overcharge you? £1000 for the ABS fault could be fixed for the £130 part and a couple of hours labour. I would beg to differ on the turbo diagnosis too (although you can never be sure) as the air mass meter issue is a bit mroe common & rectifies itself when you turn the ignition off. A turbo will either work or not so the issue would not be intermittant.

Please don't trust the local garages diagnosis & get a 2nd opinion. I honestly think you could get both problems fixed at VW for maybe £250 if you can get some goodwill from VW too.

• Thanks v much for the info, it gives me something to think about. (The accelerator problem is as you described, problem rectifies itself once the ignition is switched off and back on again). I have been in person to see the local VW dealer (we did not buy from them), and although the manager was polite he simply suggested I speak to VW Customer Services. However, since we did not buy from a VW dealer and it has not been serviced with VW I am not holding out much hope. We will definitely consider a second opinion, but the VW dealer has already said they'll charge for an initial diagnosis, and then charge for a second, more detailed, diagnosis, before the work is even started. Anyhow, will have a think. Still won't buy a VW ever again though!!

Hi Thanks for the information regarding the kit, my problem remains unsolved. I have seen three year guarenteed units that have been rebuilt from sites I.E. ecutesting.com and Remann. They quote 2 to 3 days and £350 cost. I am not sure how much it costs the take the ABS pump off and on as yet. Can you tell me where I can find information on the £150 kit you mention. I have looked through the forum and cant spot the infor anywhere ? I love my Touran but feel this problem should be fixed as it is a brake issue. I have read many many forums on this problem and have learned that the ABS unit itself is still working (I have tested mine and it is) the ESP is attached to the pump and cannot be replaced without changing the whole ABS pump. and apparently the fault lies with the manufacture as the faulty units were manufactured in a humid country where condesation got into the units when being made. whether this is true or not I am not sure apparently it also affects Golf, Seat Leon,Altea and Toledo Audi A3 and Skoda Octavia cars.......... Anyway any info on the 150 quid kits will be gratefully recieved, thanks for your time in advance !!! Cheers
