VW Touran ESP/ABS problems

  • I bought a used Touran last year from a small dealer. It's a RHD import and I bought it for the high spec and DSG gearbox. It is now 30 months old and has done less than 14000 miles, and the ESP light came on last week. My local VW main dealer diagnosed it needed a new ABS pump and said the work was outside warranty because the car is an import (2 years warranty?) The dealer has asked for goodwill from VW and has been refused once, but I'm told that the service manager is trying to fight my case. I'm ready for a fight on this one, so I'll keep you posted!

i think you will struggle. you bought a car that was never intended for this country regardless of steering side. so i think warranty will be out the question.
    ...work permit granted!
  • Thanks, I have concerns that VW will resort to the small print. My view is that the car is fundamentally the same, built in the same factory with the same inherently faulty ABS/ESP unit, and it has failed within 14000 miles/30 months. It's a shame that I like Tourans, so I don't want to get rid of it. I've had two as company cars previously and neither had the fault. They both did 80,000 miles before changing, although, perhaps significantly, I only kept each one for about 30 months......
  • Hi all my first post but thought it prudent to put my tuppence worth in. This problem also affects Seats and Audis funny thing is the Seat Altea I owned we had no issues at all getting Seat to replace under warranty even though the car was 7 months past warranty, Touran luckily came within warranty period unlike other problems we've had such as intake flap motors and heater flap motors... VW's stance is if you don't show brand loyalty by servicing at VW then they won't show goodwill.. This in my mind constitutes to blackmail nearly.. The nearest VW dealer is some 30 miles away we have a VERY GOOD independent half a mile away, no brainer if you ask me.

Also be aware there is a very common issue with the cruise control stalks failing..

We for one will be getting rid within next couple of months
  • Cruise control stalk is a simple and cheap fix. ABS unit aint.
  • I've just collected my Touran from the local VW main dealer. They had replaced the ABS pump etc. with 100% goodwill contribution from Volkswagen. (The car, as posted earlier, is an import, not three years old but less than 14k miles ; technically out of warranty.)
Many thanks to VW Crawley for pushing the claim on my behalf, and thanks to Volkswagen for doing the 'right thing.'
It's still a pity that they haven't sorted the problem with some kind of modification.:j
  • They probbaly got the claim by adjusting the chasis number for that os a UK car ;-)

I've just joined this unfortunate club!! I took the car in today and it cost me £46 to confirm that I had the problem. Currently trying to show the dealer proof of my last service at another garage but have a funny feeling they will try and get as much as they can out of me. I've just complained to watchdog! So i'm going to plea to get as many people to go to the BBC Watchdog Website and complain about this! A non serviceable part should not fail half way through a car's life - and then to try and charge £1300-£1700 to replace it!!! Not on at all!

I have a December 54 plate Touran. We had the ESP replaced at 2 1/2 years, 20,000 miles, under warranty and was advised by the service guy we were lucky as these parts are £800 alone. Two weeks ago the ESP light came on again, 41,000 miles, and VW charged £49 to diagnose and want £1000 to repair. This family size car is doing less than 7k a year as far as I am concerned it is not fit for purpose. I have also been advised if not repaired it will fail its MOT and will not be covered by insurance if in an accident. I am disgusted. Any advice.:(
  • Just 300 mls on my touran and esp/abs amber lights comes on, sometimes goes off after a mile or so but has stayed on twice. Stopping the car and restarting clears it. I know the esp light comes on when esp active but I do not think I should be seeing abs light. Any info before I am fobbed off from the dealer ?
  • I suggest you get it back to the dealer straight away together with a print of this thread because the evidence is overwhelming - unless you are already saving up your £1,000 ready to contribute to VW!
