VW Touran ESP/ABS problems
Options
We've just had some bad news with our touran - the ESP light says its off, and the garage are saying its the ABS unit itself and its going to cost £1500 to replace
Now - the car is just over the 3 years, so the guarantee ran out in June so we're not happy - and have been onto VW and the garage and between them they'll cough up 50% of the cost - but that still leaves us out of pocket for £750.
Googling around it seems to suggest this is a bit of a known issue
See :

and
http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm?md=539
(-> ESP warning light can indicate fault with ABS control unit costing £1,000 + labour. Safety recall over this may be forthcoming. )
for example
(Theres even a thread on here about someone with a similar issue - but they had 10 weeks of the guarantee left !)
So - does this seem right that we should pay the £750?
Should an ABS unit last longer than 3 years ?
Should we try taking it to small claims ?
Any other ideas ?

weve had this several times on our tourans, luckily it was under warranty0

Yes the ABS modual goes bump on them quite often.
I'm sure TheTitMan will come on here telling you how wonderful VW's are and they never break down and should all be serviced by a VW dealer.
We repalce them with fully tested 2nd hand ones from a decent breakers yard. Easy to fit. cost upto £150 for 2nd hand unit.
Possibly 1-2hours labour.0 -
An unfortunately common issue, but hard to say which vehicles it effects. Have you had any similar issues with the vehicle, eg: had the brakes done, steering judder, similar...? You could claim it as part of an ongoing issue from before the warranty expired.:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. VWs are wonderfulbut even they go wrong occasionally!
Disadvantage of 2nd hand unit...you're putting another potentially faulty unit BACK on the car. The new ones are modified and repaired. 2nd hand, tested or not, is not nearly as good as new.:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. "modified" coming from a VW chap = VW know about it and therefore should help out customers or do a recall across the board.
I've not had a 2nd hand one come back as of yet...0 -
that sounds like an inherrent fault - isn't that something thats worth pursuing in a small claims court ?
Is there any way to prove that they are 'weak' and have been replaced by a new model ?0 -

I did suggest an on-going problem may the way to claim the other 50% from the dealer too...?:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. Unfortunately - the cars been fine until now :-)
I would also dispute that its minor - its a key safety feature and it regularly fails at around 3 years old..
Would you consider it minor if the seatbelts stopped working ?0 -
If you've been a good VW customer, getting your car serviced at the dealership and maybe even bought the car there, i'd lean on the service manager some more...there may be more he can do to put a claim through. Warranty jobs dont cost the dealer anything to put through, unless they get rejected! The labour rate is lower for warranty though, so if you dont push it he/she would rather claim the higher labour rate:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. saving £1000? take the risk on the second hand unit.
surely even titherev can see the blindingly obvious answer here?
vws are not wonderful these days, they used to be,reliable, but they are mediocre nowadays.
its vws going wrong that keep you in a job at your dealership, ordering oil and filters hardly warrants a parts manager....work permit granted!0
