VW Touran ESP/ABS problems

Hi I've just bought an 05 touran 1.9 Tdi with 65,000 miles from a dealer ( not a VW one). I have had the car for 19 days and the same thing has happened to me
! The car has full service history but unlike most of you guys not from a VW dealer. I've been quoted £1300 and I'm devasted !! I don't know where I stand and who to complain to. I only have a warranty for gear box and engine faults so the dealer will not comply. How to I go to VW and which one ? The car originally comes from Yorkshire and I'm London.
VW know this is a fault and I'm upset that this happened to so many people including me !!! I was so pleased with my dream car, which has turned into a nightmare, I've had a Mk 3 Golf for years so that's why I stay with VW but the bubble has burst !!! Please can someone advise on who I should go to thanks0 -
ABOVE NOTE
Just to make sense, It has full VW service history ( Yorkshire) but I didn't buy the car from a VW dealer Thanks .......0 -
Hi, if you say it has a full VW service history, take it into your local VW dealer. They should make some offer towards the repair. If not ,and they have a computer on their desk ask them to Google VW Touran ABS/ESP faults. Be quite loud and try to draw a crowd. You should get about 16,000 hits, it's a VERY common fault, so much so that they have run out of replacement units, and are infact on back order at the mo.
VW are getting away with murder on this. Don't let them!0 -
My 3 year old, 14k miles VW Golf had a ESP light come on, my local independant garage said VW should help so I called them. They wanted to charge me £59 for a diagnostic just to then tell me that the cost of repair would be £1300. I refused to accept this so complained to VW UK.I asked them, why so many new VW's are having the ESP problem, how if it is an unknown electronic fault, this cannot be a VW design flaw and why they seem not to be concerned despite the dealership saying 'we fix many of these per week'. they replied that they cannot answer anything due to it being confidential.
i have gone back to make a further complaint about the customer services team. Shockingly bad service. They make you feel they just want rid of you as soon as possible and on top of that for 2 weeks they even doubted I was the registered owner of the car despite me having bought the car from them !!!
This went on for several weeks and around 20 emails back and forth until they relented and said I could have the disgnostic done on goodwill. So this was done and they quoted me £995 for a new ABS pump. So I wrote VW UK another letter saying that this isnt about the money anymore, I simply wanted answers as a customer to two questions. 1. why are so many cars having ESP faults 2. if its an unknown electronic problem as i had been told how can this not be a VW fault? if things break then thats fine but when 1000's of the same thing breaks i think i deserve an answer.
I had pretty much given up by now but then they replied that they will do the whole repair on goodwill !!!!!!!!!!!!!! So instead of answering me they bought my silence.
Lesson here is people DO NOT GIVE UP !!! keep going at them. Something is obviously up with this ESP thing, staff are so scared to talk about, one even said to me that he was sorry but couldn't answer me yet off the record he said if it was him he would be doing exactly the same. it I think they all know what a problem it is and are scared of getting a done with the cost of a recall. So much so they paid me off to keep quiet.
It took me about 3 months but yesterday i got it fixed and saved a grand. Argue like hell but dont lose the high ground by swearing or insulting them. I was firm, outraged even, but didnt give them a chance to cut me off. Good luck !!!0 -

so you have now learned your lesson and have now put the car up for sale or are intending trading it in before this ESP unit fails. right?...work permit granted!0 -
I've just joined this unfortunate club!! I took the car in today and it cost me £46 to confirm that I had the problem. Currently trying to show the dealer proof of my last service at another garage but have a funny feeling they will try and get as much as they can out of me. I've just complained to watchdog! So i'm going to plea to get as many people to go to the BBC Watchdog Website and complain about this! A non serviceable part should not fail half way through a car's life - and then to try and charge £1300-£1700 to replace it!!! Not on at all!0

someone really should set up a webpage especially for this issue, pay for a 'premium' brand and get junk0

Ive just bought an 06 touran with 31K miles the ESP / ABS unit was replaced by WV under warranty by a previous owner. are the replacement units being fitted by WV modified to overcome this problem or does it re-occur with the replacement ones?0

Hmmm... you won't like this but the replacements are also failing. The actual problem is water getting into the brake fluid oil and then getting into the ABS module.(VW even know what the fault is) The solution is to have the Brake fluid changed at the "new" VW recommended intervals. You need to find out if and when your fluid was changed. If it hasn't, I'd get it done as soon as possible. It's a Ticking time bomb.
The ESP generally fail when asked to do something like control a skid. With all the snow and ice around at the mo, VW service managers will be rubbing their grubby hands together!

i haven't had problems with my esp, however i have had numerous problems with the internal wiring ( indicators and lights/complete new airbag system) however the esp light goes on when these fail. at 18 months old, my car went into the garage for warrenty repairs some 24 times for these jobs. now were up to 31 times, and i am in dispute with VW as they have offered me compensation (conditional). however, this is not good enough as i will be at a complete loss financially if i accept.( due to them offering me lower than book price for the problem car, and even with the compensation, doesn't even bring it up to par for the lowest price!) i am now considering suing them for financial loss (will have to weigh this up though) and am stuck with the car until i can get rid!Give blood - its free0
