Thanks for the info on poly tunnels and also the plans. Plucking up the courage to tackle my jungle. Will start this evening, next to the fire, working on plans. Anyone who wants to order cheap seeds now might look at Dobies catalogue. They may not be as cheap as Wilkinsons but are available all year round.
  • Thanks, I've just received the plans - looking forward to going through them! :T

Just had a brillant lightbulb moment.

I have an old mini 4 tier green house, the cover ripped and it's just sat in my garage as it was the same price to buy a new one as buying a cover.

It would be perfect for growing strawberry plants.

Now do any of you strawberry experts think i could have 4 growbags or would the lower plants be in the shade too much?

Please please say it will work.

At £73.95 v mini greenhouse at £14.99 I know which one I would go for.
    Kind Regards
    Maz

I doubt the shade would be a big problem, but if your mini 4 tier green house is anything like mine I am not sure it would hold the weight of 4 growbags.

actually it's one a bought several years ago and is much better than the slightly smaller and cheaper ones i have bought since. I can't seem to find the company that made it. It wider than the ones you get now and does have two middle bars under each self has well as the outside one.

If i could grow them like this I coulkd make my strawberry patch much smaller freeing up space for other veg. Great for those of you that aren't lucky enough to have an allotment yet ;)

If you look at the photo from ken muir, you will see that they have two growbags on the frame, I'm sure if you did the same it would be fine. Four would be too many, both with space for the plants, shade and being able to pick the fruit.
I would suggest some sort of slug defeating measure to stop them climbing the frame.
Also, make sure they are very good growbags and water regularly, but not too much, strawberries don't like sitting in water.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

I have spoken to a couple of people who don't have excel so i am in the process of changing the format to word. It's not has good as the excel file but is still good.

However I do need to spend some time correcting some of the changes that occur when it's copied to word which may take a few days. My OH leaves for Italy in the morning for another big race so I'm on my own with the children until friday (when my great MIL will arrive) so time will be short but hope to have it done by Friday.

So if any of you would like me to send it in word format PM and I'll send it from Friday.
    Kind Regards

Mum to 4 - what about trying to split the frame into 2 sections (top and bottom) and having 2 growbags on each section? At the end of the day.. you will only know if it works by trying - as long as you are prepared to move growbags/plants if it doesn't work then all will work out!

I have several strawberry plants in a plastic tub with no drainholes - was a desperate measure as at the time I had nowhere to plant them. I water sparingly but make sure they have enough iyswim and those plants are thriving!!
