Trialia You've really crystallised it there. Denying someone a wheelchair they need because they are too young is as bad as senying someone cancer treatment because they are geriatric. I wonder how they would react if it ws put to them as bluntly as this. If you need something, you need it, regardless of age!
I had a lovely couple of days with S/E. She was really shocked when I told her about the demise of the FM Thread and totally agreed with our feelings about it. She sends all her love to everyone.
I am beyond tired at the moment which is becoming a problem, and feet have been aching constantly for about the last month. Anyone found a way of dealing with the aches?
pap That sounds weird - it may be a little out of left field but have you thought about taking chair to somewhere that deals with tires? I've taken a wheelbarrow there before and they've been quite happy to look at it. They may at least be able to see what is causing the problem?
pooh Nice to see you back. Hope you are doing better now.
bz Any luck from the hoiuse owner about letting agency? Maybe suggest going direct with him rather than through letting agents when contract is up for renewal or do you prefer the security LA's give you?I must go, I have lives to ruin and hearts to breakMy attitude depends on my Latitude 49° 55' 0" N 6° 19' 60 W0 -
, I get the ageist disability attitude all the time. I'm 23 and I look healthy, so even when I have my walking stick, people treat me like I'm faking it, and if someone asks me what I do and I tell them I'm on disability because I can't work, well, I've had some horrible reactions to that from people. I hate it. I've always wanted to be a librarian, but being unable to work gets me treated like a malingerer and as if I'm mooching off the state.
When I was first diagnosed I joined a local support group and the women there said, 'Oh He..!!' You are going to have this for a long time then' . They were all in their 60s and had recently been diagnosed too.
Basically, do what feels best for you. Move when you can under your own steam, use a chair when you need to. I always take a chair to events, days out etc. Sometimes my DH carries a camping chair for me and I sit whenever and wherever I need to. It is helpful for my family to push me or carry a chair as otherwise I would continually be asking to go back to the car.
People usually see me on my best days too so presume that is how I am always
I have been awake most of the night. I have had two bad asthma attacks and have started on steroid tablets. Didn't read first that they can cause insomnia!! Lungs are beginning to feel better though. The surgery nurse was really kind and rang me at the end of surgery last night to see how I was managing.business mortgage £0))''(+ Barclay's business kitchen loan £0=Total paid off was £96105 PPI claimed and received £13527

I also get funny looks at 22 when I park in disabled bays. I recently was waiting at Tescos for a space to come free in the disabled bays - a lady was getting ready to go, and I was pulled to the side so as not to block others, but signalling. This lady raced around me and blocked the other lady, then pulled up awkwardly in the corner so she could grab it as the other lady came out.
The one leaving the spot pulled a face, but had to just pull out and allow her. I beeped the lady as she went in, and she got out and ran over to me. She said that she had taken the spot as she'd assumed I was young, that I was just trying to steal the spot and wasn't disabled.
From a one second glance at me from the back, she'd assumed I was a liar. Nice."There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow." - Orison Swett Marden0 -
Once again the typical ageist attitude... It's not just old people that are disabled!
I'm big scary 18 today and am struggling a little with being so dependant at this age... Had a bit of a flip out last night when dad was fussing over me in wheelchair "are you alright there? Warm enough? Not hungry?" etc etc, just wanted to yell I'm not a toddler!!
Am currently going through an alcohol intolerant stage and couldn't face having people round who're doing so much more than me at the same age, or drinking when younger than mepathetic much?!
I am going out this eve though, to a bonfire night organised by church youth group, planning some pimp my wheelchair fun with glow sticks and fairylights! Will be nice, apart from the night walk they all go on, whilst I stay and slice rolls for the bbq... muddy fields, styles and wheelchairs aren't the best mix...!
Hope all doing awap today, hugs!0 -
Blimey..everything's changed...I haven't been here for months and months and months because life has been catching up with me:rolleyes:
I had some good news a few weeks ago - Access to Work will pay for any adjustments that I need to my business (I am self employed). I had a visit from someone who had a bit of a moan at me for keeping some items that I had been given when I worked at the University, I had tried giving them back but no-one was interested so I kept them:rolleyes: I have a laptop to use but the screen is now way too small so it has been suggested that I get a 22 inch monitor and an hydraulic arm to attach to my very tiny desk - needless to say I haven't bothered:rolleyes:
I have been gadding about a fair bit mainly networking and now it is paying off as I have work in the pipeline...nothing to do with weddings either:D I offered my services for free for a huge project to organise a 5Km fun run in Swindon next June in aid of the H4H charity (help for heroes) and then a paid job as a publicist/manager of a rock band (as far removed from weddings as it is possible to be).
Since I had my cataract op back in July, I have been having more and more dizzy spells to the point where I have been known to fall over as these spells come on quite suddenly. I have had a balance problem for ages and used to have tablets that I could take as and when and so I tried to do without them and have managed that for 18 months but now the dizzy spells are back with a vengence. I now have new meds that I have to take 3 x a day but I can honestly say that I havent had any dizzy spells since although there have been times that I have felt a bit odd as though I am going to go dizzy but it doesnt happen.
Hope all is well with everyone?0 -

Happy Birthday Invasion, I hope you had a good day :bdaycake:
I've had a bad week and to take my mind off the pain have been catching up on loads of course work for this corresspondance course I'm doing, so I havn't been online much. Been Xmas shopping with dh in Crawley today on my scooter, it was a nightmare, so busy and I spent more time trying to find my way out off shops as I did actually shopping as I kept getting trapped in narrow aisles or behind a crowd of people, I did get quite a bit though so not pannicking quite so much now. I'm going to my DIL's surprise baby shower tonight which should be fun, I've made her one of the nappy cakes that are on the celebration forum, I'll see if I can add a picture of it here. Hope everyones had a good weekend.
Sorry havn't got a clue how to add a photo, but it's very prettyReal stupidity beats artificial intelligence every time.

Happy birthday invasion! It is really hard to be so young and disabled - as peers that age DO NOT GET IT. That sounds like an awesome night though, especially dressing up your wheelchair with glowsticks! Hope you have loads of fun, and stay warm!
Welcome back Horace!Access to Work is a great scheme, isn't it? They just funded a load of stuff for me, which I will hopefully be getting soon.
Who moaned about you keeping the stuff from uni? I thought you were either told - 'this is a loan give it back by x date' or 'this is yours'. If they don't chase you, that's their own tough luck.
Hope you rest up black paw and feel better soon!
Ooh, don't say that suep, I'm still trying to gather the confidence to get a scooter to go shopping at some point!
I've found the next town over does them for free, so I don't have to pay the £17 here! I'm still outraged about the high cost. I might write to them and whinge! But don't know how to say it without sounding all 'we deserve free stuff, dammit'!
Oh those nappy cakes are awesome! Have a good time. I believe you need a hosting website, like www.photobucket.com (which you need an account for) or tinypic which you don't. Once you have the direct link to it, you click the second button in which looks like a picture and put the link. Let me know if you need more help, I don't think I'm being very clear."There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow." - Orison Swett Marden0 -
:bdaycake::bdaycake::bdaycake: Happy Birthday Invasion - hope you have a great evening
Nice to see you again Horace, hope the meds sort out the dizzyness pdq
Sorry you are in so much pain suep. Christmas shopping - must do some
paw hope you enjoyed the family bonfire, sorry you are so tired though.
Must go cook, shouldn't be here really - I smell burning :eek:Murphy was an optimist!!!0 -
Happy Birthday Invasion!
hope you've had a good day.
poohbear, it isn't fun to cope with, I admit. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at 16, EDS/HMS at 18 and fibro at 19, so I've been sick for a long time, but the ageist attitude gets marginally less pervasive once you're out of your teens. Marginally.Homosexual, Unitarian, young, British, female, disabled. Do you need more?0
