Saucy, Red cross will hire out wheelchairs for free (they do ask for small donation @ end of loan) also, shopmobility is normally free :) x

I just looked up Shopmobility funnily enough, before coming here.

I was looking to see how much it would be to hire a scooter so I could go Christmas shopping.

It costs £15 for membership (which you have to pay) and £2 every time you hire one out. Seems a hell of a lot to me. I only wanted to use it once or twice. :(

Seems like they are the only choice as well.

I'm really worried about how I am going to do my shopping. I've been getting some stuff online, but smaller bits will cost a fortune having to pay postage on top as well. Plus I'd just like to wander about and have a look for stuff.

  • Try the redcross?
Mine gave me a number to call in the morning, there is a deposit and you are asked to make a donation at the end, but she was friendly and said that they understand that if I could afford to pay the earth I'd buy my own wheelchair!
Looks like I'd have to pick it up though, and that could be hard....

Sat in my flat, but there are girls having an argument outside the life (which is right outside my door...) and now someone crying and screaming...and the horrible smell of cigarette smoke, which is now everywhere in the room. Yuk.

Don't give up Jaz, we'll find something :)

Thanks Saucy. They don't make it easy, do they?

The Shopmobility place is far away as well, so you'd have the drive the bloody scooter ages to get back into town.

Does anyone know exactly how it works - do you drive up to a shop then leave it outside, or take them in? I assume there isn't always enough room - but don't people ever try to steal them?

jazabelle, it all depends on where you are. Manchester's Shopmobility scheme is in the city centre, free hire, and you take them back inside. In Sheffield the staff just ask you for the key and drive them back into the storage space themselves. But they can't be moved without the key being in the ignition - they're really heavy, and I'm told very hard to hotwire. So no worries about people trying to steal them.

    Ah, that's a !!!!!!. Quite a difference between £17 and free!

Yes, it is a shame. I could have hotwired one for free!
