Penny-Pincher!! wrote: »Nobody answered my question yesterday about the soup and there is now no chicken left as DD ate the legs last night. How can I make an easy soup in the SC with Sweet Pots, carrots, onion and I have other store cupboard ingredients......any help appreciated.
The easiest way to make soup is to chop the veg small, pour over boiling water or stock, and simmer until the veg is cooked. YUou can then blend of leave chunky.
I prefer to soften an onion and some garlic in a bit of oil first - IMO it gives a deeper flavour, but for sweet potato and carrot, it makes not much difference
I'd season this soup with some ground cumin and coriander, and possibly ground or grated ginger, and garnish with fresh coriander, or a coriander pesto :T

Work this morning, then have to make and decorate large sponge cake for DD1's wedding on Saturday (am a nervous wreck over this believe me!) can't say anything about it though as she want's how it looks to be a surprise ........wonder if lopsided, unevenly iced and badly decorated cake counts a surprise?:o Am very proud of DD1 - she is getting married for the 2nd time and has arranged all of it herself in a very OS affordable way - she's spent less on the whole thing than a lot of bride's spend on a dress.
Breakfast - crumpets and fruit
Packed lunches - ham sandwiches, fruit and HM sponge
Dinner - savoury mince (to use up past their best veg) with rice and followed by pancakes filled with stewed apples from our tree.
Right - off here now or I will be late at the office. Have a good day.People Say that life's the thing - but I prefer reading

Morning all
Very quick post as have run out of morning. Really enjoyed kedgeree last night. DS wasn't so keen but at least he tried it. Spent yesterday de-cluttering DS room again. Managed to get some good Xmas bargains in Asda so was quite pleased. Also ordered a Dr Who DVD and a book from Amazon in their salefor presents. Wanted to have a bke-up but didn't have enough eggs, so made a lemon drizzle cake which has gone down really well.
Today plan to go to the allotment. Am only putting the heating on for half an hour morning and night as I find thats enough for us. Will hang washing out in a mo. Lunch is left-over kedgeree. Am cooking beef stew and dumplings for DS and OH as I am going out for an Italian tonight with the girls.
Have a good day all and big hugs to those who need one.

Morning ladies!
I am actually just off to catch a few hours sleep while the OH does his day job, and will get back up again when he is home at 1400. I have been up for hours talking with my friend in America, so my head is feeling a bit cotton wooly.
pawpaws - nice to have you back with us - hope your dad feels better soon
Kaat hon - well done on your win, how fab!
Beth - :rotfl: :rotfl: lol.. no, the cat gut didn't come from the cat...lol though I was sorely tempted! She doesn't understand the fact that I am living my life the wrong way round for a while so wants me awake when I am sleeping and when I am awake and looking for some love she is ignoring me and sleeping with the OH...:rotfl:
marie - hope you enjoy it! My gran was always pickling and drying and doing weird things with food and kilner jars,so I have recipes and things going back years, plus I found the more mature ladies at church had fantastic family recipes that I used to beg borrow or steal when I was younger! However, I have to admit that 'every day' recipes can sometimes be a blind spot for me!
Mrs Drudge - hope you feel better soon hon.
Haven't got enough chicken left for a full meal today so going to spoil ourselves and have it as coronation chicken for lunch - mayo, curry powder, chopped celery...Mmmm
Dinner may well be fish pie, depending on the OHs mood. He sometimes just doesn't want fish! However, I have pollock fillets (cheap from Lidl) and whoopsied prawns and I spoilt us in the Tescos order last night and bought some smoked haddock. We normally have kippers as they are so cheap but I prefer the texture of haddock when it's a fish pie. We have two sachets of cheese sauce left from my pre-OS days, and some fresh broccoli, so as long as he fancies it, that is our dinner. Otherwise it will just be toad in the hole with lots of onion gravy and cabbage!
BM is on and I notice the OH put the washing machine on too before he left so I can go to bed and not think about the washing mountain that was gathering in the corner!
Hugs to all who need them and congratulations to anyone who is celebrating today.

Morning all,
DF popped in to say he's geting a tree surgeon to lop off some branches from some of his trees and would we like the wood. He has paid to have the logs removed then rembered we use the inglenook, so free logs being delivered today.
An inspector from listed buildings dept.is calling to deceide if we are allowed to remove render off the cottage, it's cracked and trapping water that is making the stone wet. We have always wanted to remove the render but cost out weighed necessity. But now we have removed some, to let the water escape, the stone work is beautiful. Grade 2 listed and built in 1540.
Must get a move on, he's due here at 9.
Any ideas as to what to do with another load of apples we were given? can't face another cake or crumble.
Off to catch up.0 -
Morning all
It is absolutely pouring here, and I have the washing to do, so really don't want to use the TD, so will have to put things over the radiatorsWinter hasn't arrived yet, and I am already fed up with the dark mornings.
Have some celery to use, so want to do celery soup, but can't find the recipe I used last time and it was lovely. Having an M & S fish and chips for dinner, I bought their lamb shanks on Tuesday, so this was half price. Their lamb shanks had plenty of meat on them, but at £9.99, they weren't any nicer than the Aldi alternative for half the price
Might declutter the wardrobe later as I am struggling to close the doors
Have a good day everyone xYou're only young once, but you can be immature forever0 -
Thriftlady - I now shop like you do, have a Tesco order coming today - tins & drinks etc. On Friday will pop to the slaughter house shop and pick up meat for sunday & next week then on the way home go to the little veg shop where they only sell what they grow plus local eggs. Its much better quality, works out cheaper in the long run and supports local shops. Am going to Morrisons as I said before as the coffee I think is nearer £2 cheaper!
Penny-Pincher - you can also use the Remoska for soup.
Bethebee - not very good at preserves & the like but do you like Pork - if so what about some hm Apple Sauce, also if it keeps you could make it for other people? My OH loves apple sauce with pork but never forget whilst in America they offered it to us instead of fries with a kids burger meal.
Just having a coffee after the school run, think it will be salmon tonight with new pots, peas and garlic butter. Just remember need to make some bread as well.0 -
