Play one dealer off against another. find cars you like at 3 main dealers and feign interest with all the cars. Pick a salesman who (a) you like and (b) is senior enough to authorise a good deal; build up a rapor and tell him that whichever car you get you will buy it through him [ they do move cars between dealers]. Let him suggest a price, then wait for him to come back to you with a better price.
Always deal towards the end of the month and tell the salesman you are prepared to complete the deal that month. Good for their figures.
Don't know whereabouts you are, but we found Park Lane BMW the best at discounts. Could be an urban myth, but allegedly that branch is only their as a flagship store and they don't aim to make a profit; so are more willing to do good deals.
One more potential urban myth, tell them you are thinking of buying a Merc. Apparently they can offer an extra discount to entice you away from the competition. They gave us a bigger part-ex value than the merc dealers!I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I heard a dealer on the radio, in Scotland say that he sold an X5 last year for £19k and he had the exact same car on his courtyard at £11k without any interest being shown.Mortgage free

Depends how keenly priced it is to start.
We let one car go, expecting the dealer to come back to us for further negotiations. He did return but only to tell us it had been sold to someone else! Another car became available within the week.
Car prices aren't my thing; on house prices they say if your first offer isn't embarassing, its too high! Remember you can always increase your offer.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Depends on what price it's up for.
High end 2nd hand car values are in freefall.
Ignore Parkers as it's not accurate, you need a glasses valuation. Problem is Glasses isn't giving a value on this at the moment:rolleyes: Parkers says £17-18K so expect less than that. Are you looking at a silver one in Plymouth? If so then It's at least £4.5K overpriced:eek:
Really hard to value and ideally you need to speak to someone in the trade to give you it's true worth.0 -
how comes Glasses aren't doing a value on this?
Don't know anyone in the trade!0 -

I just searched Glass's guide but I don't know what trim the X5 you're looking at is, but have a look here for a free search:
