PS, I found a lot of useful ideas on this thread thank you. I'm often unwell and we would find freezing portions of mash and yourkshire puds etc invaluable.

I get funny looks when I buy...

    12xloaves
    12xkidney beans
    24xtinned tomatoes
    12xtomatoe puree tins
    12xbeans
    12xsweetcorn

But thats for our sandwich shop! :rotfl:

My pet peeve is jars of pasta sauce because I know how to make up a far better sauce in 5 mins.

Cheesy Pasta I hate the taste of this, the smell everything, and it takes 20mins to make! I can make homemade maccaronni in this time!

Though when I go to the supermarket mine is usually a trolley full of crisps, irn bru (for DH), bottles of jucie for kids (works out cheaper than giving them bottles of diluting as they just loose the bottles), biscuits etc. I get my veg and meat from the veg man and meat man who supplies our shop.

Ice we by if we are having a party for the polystyrene bottle box!

Kitchen spray with bleach, me and bleach dont get on! The spray doesnt ruin my clothes and cleans the white kitchen counters nicely. Watered down bleach still doeswnt work with me, it ends up on my top or jeans, I'm messy that way!

And pancakes, I don't know why, I just cant make pancakes!!! I have tried every way possible (hot pan, cold pan, heavy pan light pan eyes shut eyes open hands on my toes) very embarassing as I hail from a family of chefs.
  • I must admit that I sometimes glance in people's trolleys but I hope I'm not smug about it....

I buy a mixture of things and whilst I cook most meals from scratch, there are things which I almost never make because I don't like making them - things like bread, potato cakes, yoghurt, gravy, beefburgers and other stuff which I can't think of right now. I do like making, and so wouldn't dream of buying ready made or instant scones, fairy cakes, jelly, custard, biscuits, pancakes, lasagne or other pasta dishes, pizza, cauliflower cheese, ready made carrot and swede and the like and other stuff which also escapes me ATM

There are some things which I think are easy to make but just as easy to buy and not that different in terms of cost - I regularly buy Basics yorkshire puddings at 53p for 15 - I can't make them for that and as there are only 3 of us then I get two meals out of one packet. I also buy tinned pineapple in juice instead of fresh pineapple becuase it is less messy and I can buy a smaller amount at a time, much more cheaply. Same with some other tinned fruits in juice, and frozen cauliflower and brocolli which I think taste as good as fresh, although I don't like frozen carrots. I always buy the premium squashes because I think they taste better, and I almost never buy pop of any kind.

I have to confess also that I bought some Sainsburys TTD goose fat King Edward roast potatoes the other day and they were absolutely lovely - NOTHING like Aunt Bessies - they really DID taste like home cooked - I think I will buy them again:o

I think that as long as people are buying stuff that they like and not going into debt to do it then it is their choice. I don't smoke or drink like alot of people, but somehow it has become alright to publicly criticise, and even demonize in some cases, people for what they eat but I've never heard anyone going up to someone smoking and giving them grief, same with people buying alcohol. I wonder if Jamie Oliver smokes?

When i did my big shop last week a lady picked up 4 500g of mince, i noticed so said that the 1kg mince was buy for 2 £6.00 but she still took the 4 x 500g and paid the extra.
No matter how good your intentions are, some folk do not like to be seen as not thinking how to save money on their shopping. Sometimes buying two smaller packs works out cheaper than buying the large packs.

  • Agree with you weegie, the other day asda had buy 2 packs of 4 activia for £3 but it was only £2.97 for the 8 pack. You have to consider the options.
I make my own of a lot of stuff but often find I can make a better quality version of something for the same price of buying economy brand in asda.
Mine - hummous, you can make it so cheap but cost so much to buy.

I work in Sainsbury's, and sometimes it amazes me the things people buy because 'it was on offer' or 'it is a bargain'. A bargain is only a bargain if you really need it. I must admit I have been guilty of 'persuading' customers to buy products they don't really need or want.:D

TTD products are in general better, there are a few exceptions, i.e TTD lasagne, avoid it like the plague, it is the most disgusting thing I have ever eaten. Just another point, a lot of own brand goods are just as tasty as branded goods, when I worked in another supermarket several years ago, their baked beans were a lot tastier than the leading brand.

It's just not the same I'm afraid.
I enjoy reading the local evening or the Sunday papers and reading it online just doesn't cut it for me. !!!!!!s up the enjoyment of the crossword too.
Same with e-books - I'd much rather go to the library and read the actual book itself.
