Hi everyone. First time poster, long time lurker (only got round to registering today though)the sky box will never download update after the first install, this goes for normal sky, Sky+ and SkyHD
Whatever you're smoking, I want some.
I am not a sky engineer first of all (I don't believe you are either to be honest, but if you want to keep claiming it, it doesn't bother me), merely a customer, but the claim of it never downloading updates after the install is complete rubbish.
I have forced updates on my own Sky+ box a couple of times, but it does download updates on it's own. There have been lots of times when it's been on standby in the morning, because it's rebooted after doing a software update on it's own.
Furthermore, I am led to believe by sky engineers on another forum I frequent that there are two software updates floating around at any one time.
One is the most up to date version available, and is applied automatically.
The other is applied if you do a force download, and is usually the prior version. (I may have those parts the wrong way round, but one is the prior version that can be rolled back to in case the latest version causes problems.)0 -
Can anyone help. My SKY+ box (the bog standard white one every new subscriber gets) keeps crashing. Whilst viewing the picture and sound is lost, and although the green power light is on, the box is unresponsive. The box then switches itself off and after about 2 minutes switches back on to channel 998. I have already had 1 new box and this is doing the same thing. The engineer who replaced the 1st box said power surges could be causing the box to crash. Is this possible? Any advice would be welcomed before I go back to SKY again.0

I've been havng the same problem. Spent 20 minutes on the phone to Sky tech support. Ended up doing a software update:
Switch off power to box (remove power cable).
Hold down the Back Up button on the box and plug the power back in.
Keep holding button down until all three other lights on the box come on.
Tv should now say downloading software update (10 minutes).
After that, leave on standby for a further 2-3 minutes.
When it eventually switched on it had exactly the same problem.
Called them back and they asked to do another software refresh:
Disconnect power.
Hold down Left and Right buttons on the box.
Reconnect power.
Wait for green circle to light.
Let go of buttons.
Wait.
Lights will flash and then box will go into standby again.
Leave for a few minutes and then switch back on.
That fixed it! I lost all my Sky+ recordings but the system runs far faster (planner comes up really quickly and navigates a lot smoother than it had).
Hope this helps someone else.0 -
this worked for me - can't thank you enough !!0

LNB = Low Noise Blockdownconverter.
fair point, but a bit picky to say the guy is trying to help people and save them money, I viewed this thread because of my Sky+ problems and his update tip worked. Maybe you should get off your high horse and stop trying to be clever....0 -

I don't think he was trying to be clever. The first thing I noticed when I read the instructions was that it's called an LNB not an LMB. I'd be slightly worried if a qualified electrician came round to my house and said he'd "have to wire something up to the customer box thingy" instead of consumer box. I saw it myself as a warning that he may not know what he's talking about. But as you said his advice is working, so he does know what he's talking about. Now we know the technical terms as well so we can pretend we know what we're talking about when on the phone to Sky.

If I get a power cut (RCD flicks off if a bulb blows in my house!) then my Skybox wont come on, sometimes takes over 12 hours to turn on. Just sits there with red light on.
Today, after 12+ hours it turned on but wont record saying error, reset machine by pressing Select. I did this and low and behold it wont come back on again.
Grrr.
Trying a software reset now and will report back on results for future sufferers.
Done standard reset using backup key and then waiting 4 minutes, wont turn back on. Going to try method 2.
Green light is flashing but system doesn't seem to be resetting?
Found on a forum you have to press "select" on sky box when green light is flashing... this formats HDD.

Don't be scared to cancel Sky - they will come back to you. We cancelled after a lot of hassle & they have upto now phoned us 5 times offering us deals !

We cancelled two and a half years ago. They did send 'deals' to us for a few months, but none that involved a price cut, it was all about free Sky+ boxes and other such rubbish.
We've been Freesat (using Sky's box) since we cancelled and to be honest I haven't missed it at all. I certainly haven't missed giving Rupert Murdoch £30 a month."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0
