A software update will just just update the software, it will not delete any recordings, however if you do start getting delayed actions from the box, then that is the software. however if you get failed recordings then your hard drive is the problem. sky only offer a 1 year warrentee of the box, but i promise it is 3 years. thats why if you ring sky and say your leaving they will always fix the box for free... this will work for people who have normal sky, if you want sky+ for free then just tell sky your leaving and want to cancel, and say you want to go to freeview so you can record tv, they will offer you sky+ free install and free box, all you have to do is pay for the movie package 1, thats £24 a month, for 3 months then cancel the movies, then u got movies for 3 months and a free sky+ box.... easy... Happy days

Ok, I will make this as simple as I can to follow so everyone can follow it, not just tech heads…

First a little about sky+ and why it crashes
The sky+ box was rushed though testing as there was a massive demand on hard drive recorders, so sky decided to get on the bandwagon,
But sadly it had problems, the software the box used was slow and sluggish, the tiny processor inside the sky+ box could not handle the software and the recording of channels simultaneously, so Sky+ decided to use software that was light on the machine but was unreliable.
And so it come to pass, that the sky+ box was rushed in to our homes, but now sky is paying the price, and sadly so are we.
SO WHAT CAN YOU DO? I HEAR YOU SHOUT???

Update the machine! I recommend once every other month!

Follow these steps to update the software and clean the box to help make it more reliable…

1, Turn the power fully off to the sky box, from the plug

    2, Count down 90 seconds

3, once the 90 seconds have expired, Press and hold the backup button on the box, ((Keep it pressed until I say to let go))

4, Now restore power to the box, keeping the backup button pressed

5, After 20 seconds or so, The box will show an update screen, it will take about 10-15 minutes

6, Let go of the backup button and relax and let the box update, once updated you should see a faster, reliable system

Please let me know how it worked for you!!!

Just wanted to say thanks! This worked for us and was simple to do.

if your LMB brakes then im sorry but there is nothing you can do, u need to ring sky. however if your dish is out of alignment then just get a friend to move the dish until u get a good signel.[/B]

I know that Sky installers aren't employed for their command of English but surely they can spell LNB?

    LNB = Low Noise Blockdownconverter.

Not sure if this is relevant but ... we recently had SKY+ HD installed and the fitter told us not to turn it off at night as it's like a computer and will regularly crash. She was very surprised that our SKY+ box had lasted almost 4 years with no problems after being switched off each night.

Maybe Mr Sky man above may confirm if this is a common problem.

im sorry to all the morons out there that dont know what an LMB is, even if they dont know im sure they would search on google, stop showing off and showing your such a geek, all sky staff need an NVQ, which im sure you have still to achieve,

    Kind Regards: Lee:T

When a sky box is turned off, the LMB is powered down, and other parts inside the box most Importantly the PCB board is powered down, this regulates the stream from satellite to video conversion, and the PCB board lasts so long, and has a life of about 20,000 hours. I know it sounds a lot but you think if you leave the box on all night, that’s 9 hours each night plus the hours it is in use!

Thanks H201980 I was having problems with my sky+ box (only a few mths old) in that the remote would not always work to change the channel over or access the tv guide etc, it did work the tv which I thought was strange, changed the batteries with no luck, called sky technical help who after 20minutes said the remote was faulty and is sending another out...I happened to come across your helpful post and did as you suggested, FIXED!!! Thanks for your post as it did really help as it has been a pain having to use the box to scroll through all the channels to get from 101-501 etc.
Today I noticed that some channels were not displaying and said that there was no sattelite signal being received, all fixed by turning the box off at the plug and then back on again, over last few weeks have also had a few occasions where the box would freeze and not turn on/off or change channel again all solved by turning off at the plug..do you think I have a duff box, what should I do?
    thanks

OK, if you have problems with your dish, it is most times one of 2 problems, wind has blowen the dish out of alignment,

or if you look at your dish u will see where the wire comes out of, this little box on the end of the sky dish is called an LMB, they brake very easy, and wind, rain, or the most comman is a bird landing on the LMB.

You " work for Sky " and do not even know that it is an LNB, not an LMB, sounds about right.

That's silly - if it was me, I wouldn't care if the person who comes to repair the Sky box can spell or not. I would just want them to be able to make the Sky box work.

It wasn't about " spelling " it was the fact that a Sky employee who has said that he has fitted 1000's of Sky Receivers and equipment doesn't even know the correct name/title for the kit that he is fitting.

Most of the other stuff that he has posted is also rubbish.
