Who bought the newspaper? If she did, then the voucher is hers, not her boss's. If the boss did not give her the voucher, then the cost of the lunch to him is unchanged.

If she comes clean and says she used the voucher to get him a cheap lunch, which she found out about on mse, then maybe the boss will start monitoring her internet use.

I would mention the offer to him and see if he wants me to buy the paper for him so he can get it cheaper, but I doubt he'd be a mad money saver, and would just tell me not to bother and pay full price
  • If it was me I would tell my boss about the offer but he would be paying for the paper not me! Especially if I don't normally buy the paper. So the paper cost would come out of his money - not mine.

How you handle other peoples' money is a deciding hallmark of your character, so whether it's your boss's money or the company's money, it's important to be trustworthy about it. So I'd certainly give him the benefit of the special deal, but I'd also let him know about it, by saying "Hey Boss, there's a special deal on this at the moment so I've managed to save you £x." Decent bosses remember this kind of thing and are more likely to look after you if you're looking after their interests. You're a team, remember?

Spend the spare fiver on cream cakes for the girls in the office and tell them the boss has treated them ;)
So what about the lads in the office?

I'd buy the paper with the boss's money and back with the full change after exploiting the offer and suggest he treats the rest of the staff to cake from his unexpected windfall.

that's the thing you haven't taken into account. It is probably one voucher per customer and and there is probably a biq queue! so if she has to get him the offer then either she is missing out herself or queueing up twice! plus she has to buy the paper and spend time getting that .

Who mentioned a voucher? i believe this is a simple instore promotion! I say if its only instore and its not promoted elsewhere, still give money back, or at least mention something about the offer. Chances are if he's a good boss he'll say keep money for being honest! I would!

Give the boss his change and tell him about the promotion. As a PA collecting lunch, dry cleaning, or anything else your boss asks you to collect is part of your job. Saving him money will always be looked upon favourably at pay review time.

    Of course she shouldn't!
She should tell him about the offer and give him back his change.

I don't know - do we really have to asked if people should be honest??????

depends on so many things. if he never expects change from the £25, then however she sources it, it up to her, and her abilities. if she's thrifty, then so be it.

if it's not actually part of her job desc, then keep it.

if he's too bone idle to get it himself, she deserves it.

if she thinks it will make an impression, tell him she's saved the money, and earn a gold star.
Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?
