Yep, Rebecca should come clean - the amount gained by the deceit is not worth your reputation.

Im amazed at how many self rightous, goody goody, self deluding replies there are to this question....I bet most people having just read the posed question immediately thought `I'll take the money`....only when they `analyse` the question do they begin to moralise...basically going against their initial gut reaction. In my view theres no issues of `stealing` in this case. In fact i'd never even spendmore than 2 seconds thinking through my decision. Most people here who seem to be taking the` moral high ground` I suspect follow the do what i say not what i do approach! Its a petty question....nothing deep about it...it doesn't reflect on your moral character any more so than admitting you kill spiders! Doing the right thing is a very individual choice and to class taking the money in this case as stealing is very silly! (as for getting `found out` and sacked, have the guts to stand by your actions...and don;t get found out in the first place!)0

It's not just about thinking of an outcome if you get found out (which it is highly doubtful you would). You are already a trusted employee/assistant. Because this scenario doesn't allow for the boss requiring a receipt.
That means he is not claiming for his lunches on expenses (like many do), so he himself is not a greedy self serving boss (at least when it comes to paying for his own lunch). So 'Rebecca' must already know this. Telling him he has got a bargain is then another reason for him to raise her in his estimations, being totally trustworthy and honest.
Maybe you might call that brown-nosing.
It very much depends upon the boss himself. Many on here have the opinion that any boss who expects his lunch to be fetched for him deserves her not to be so honest. But there are those of us who are in those sorts of positions who realise that things like that are part of the job.
Little things all contribute to being more employable for your next job.
So........... contrary to what some might say, that scenario could be one small part of a larger picture of being selfish and thinking of ones own ends and where that little extra honesty might get you in the future.0 -
not only are some posts missing the fact she has to pay for the paper but if you check the link it may not allways be a bacon bagette so she may also have a jugement call to make if it is not bacon and he is expecting bacon his disappointment may turn to anoyance but ALLWAYS be honest and explain to him the scenario you won't only gain respect but trust too for the initiative and not only from him but all else who find out and as we all know there aint no secrets in the work-place0

get her own lunch with the voucher and pay the usual for him!0

I was PA to a man who promised me a pay rise for 3 years, which I never got, even though he managed to budget for pay rises for himself.
I often had to buy lunch for him, and when he gave me £5 to go get a sandwich and coke, then that's what it ended up costing him. Any 'change' there was I kept as payment for getting them, after all I was using my own time to go get them, and were I to do it in 'work' time then it would cost the company more than the change I received.
Any people said, nice bosses get goot treatment, bad bosses get what they deserve.0 -
I would suggest Rebecca advise her boss of the offer. If he is bothered by the saving he will either get the Independent himself or ask her to and take it up. However if saving £4 a day doesn't mean that much to him then she is perfectly within her rights to use her initiative and time and own money (by buying the paper and cutting out the coupon) to profit from his lack of money saving ways. I certainly wouldn't consider that stealing as long as she has given him the opportunity to take it up.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 315 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts:money: LBM #2 - December 2017 - total £17,663.75 DFD - January 2023 :jDD - £500; OH - £7889; Barclaycard - £5135.29, Halifax - £1725.50, Plumbstop - £2226.62, HMRC - £187.34Contingency Fund - £10/ £10000

Hi - Id tell him about the offer - then she should also get her sandwich at the same time for £1.
Always be honest.0 -
Keep the change - even a gofer is up for an initiative payment!!!0

depends on so many things. if he never expects change from the £25, then however she sources it, it up to her, and her abilities. if she's thrifty, then so be it.
if it's not actually part of her job desc, then keep it.
if he's too bone idle to get it himself, she deserves it.
if she thinks it will make an impression, tell him she's saved the money, and earn a gold star.
Agreed, but ignoring the last part for a moment...
I see it as a business transaction. The boss is 'contracting out' his lunch. She is being paid to provide that lunch. If she can cut her costs, however that may be, but still provide the same lunch then she is entitled to keep the profit.
As for the comments that it's stealing - is it stealing if a window cleaner, to whom you pay £5 per week, manages to reduce his costs by sourcing window cleaning products cheaper from another supplier, but not telling you about it or passing on the saving to you?0
