It really doesn't matter what any Estate Agent or someone like Nationwide says a place is worth or was worth, do you think someone who could physically raise that much money will pay it at the moment.
Yes, with the bonkers salaries they pay in the oil industry i find it more likely than anywhere else in the UK.
I am actually planning on moving within the next 6mths into Aberdeen centre, fed up with the traffic congestion getting in and out now so im sure i'll let you all know facts and figures;)
Instead of bidding the norm 25% OO that Scotland would have seen this time last year, i shall only be bidding max 10% OO due to the current conditions and yes it will be likewise that someone will do the same for my property, but i have taken that already into account with the figures quoted.
Aberdeen really is the place to be, for great salaries and affordable housing, i have no idea how anyone can argue with that.
With all these job losses and unemployment figures released by the media in the past month or so, Aberdeen is still booming. We have a shortfall of around 25 engineers alone in my workplace, starting salaries ITRO of £45k, i know in the 2 rival companies opposite us, they too have a shortfall of similar numbers.
Great for us as it means a hell of a lot of OT;)0 -
Every penny is a prisoner north of the border, no-one sells for a loss up here, they would just stay put where they are. Ever heard the 1 about the Scotsman dropping a pound coin??
My OH used to define a Jew as someone who could buy from a Scot, seller to a Yorkshire man, and turn a profit.......much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

It's not as true as it used to be I don't think. I'm from Yorkshire, and I throw my money around like a man with no arms - and I bet you tuppence you won't find a mean Scotsman these days.Hurrah, now I have more thankings than postings, cheers everyone!0 -

Just to add an extra bit of annoyance to the scaremongerers amongst you, my signature below has been updated with these FACTS.
See, i told you there were exceptions to your beliefs, some people infact have made money

ISTL...You will love this;)0 -
On paper you are correct mitchaa.
The FACT is however, that you have not sold, may not sell for weeks, do not have the cash in your hands, and could perhaps only break-even in time.
Though I don't think this matters unless you are going to rent/downsize.
While gloating over the "yes I have made money in this HPC", have you considered that "the house" in the City (where prices are around 35% more, on average) is now going to cost you £8K more in cash terms, than if you'd gone straight into the City...?
Going up the ladder needs prices to drop to narrow the gap between rungs...(even if the property may be down ladder physically, the City element will raise it again)
Interesting article in August; http://www.businessweek.com/globalbiz/content/aug2008/gb20080812_615325.htm
"The good times rolled for more than a decade, but then, as the price of oil slumped to just $10 a barrel in the 1990s, thousands of ex-pats quit the city and fears grew for its future.
But all that has changed.
Brent Crude is now trading at the once-unimaginable figure of $120 a barrel."
As the oil price created the boom, what are the predictions now the barrel price has halved?
It may well boom again after the recession, but what will be the effect meantime?0 -

It's gone quiet because some of us have more to do on a Saturday morning than sit on our dung heap crowing.......no apology because....you have made nothing until your house is sold.....you will pay more for your next house and thereby 'lose' anything you imagine you have 'made'. Silly boy.

ps I try not to post doom and gloom but seeing as I am here...This country is in for a right battering...we are suffering from America's woes at the moment but our own defaults have barely started yet.....anyone who thinks we have ever had anything like this situation before is in for a shock....the 70's and 90's cannot be compared...this is more like the thirties (I wasn't alive in the thirties !! but I have read about it). Of course I except that Aberdeen will be completely untouched by this situation. A xDon't believe everything you think.

As i said, takes a sort of person to admit when they are wrong:rolleyes:
Silly boy....Personal insult...Maturity levels....I shall leave you alone now. You seem bitter that i have 'made' money when others probably like yourself are in negative equity.
Bitter is not the word to use, but seeing as im an adult, i shall not retort to tit for tat personal insults;)
Civilized discussion, not playground tactics. You lose credibility when you go down that road;)
How will i lose anything that i have made, i dont get that? How do you know i dont have intentions of downsizing to keep my mortgage the same amount?
I have a 4bed detached, there's only myself and my partner and a baby boy. Nothing wrong with moving into a 3bed semi detached.
What this will get me is a deposit for my next house, if i was in negative equity i would have no chance of moving. This is even if i move, it is not set in stone, i have no real need to move apart from traffic congestion. I like living in the countryside, not so much the city so nothing is set in stone.
I wont discuss this any longer, i have provided proof my area is up, that's all that matters to me.0 -

If you are going to downsize, then do it now before prices drop lower.
Unless of course you really do believe that your area is immune to falls and you want to wait a while to maximise what you bank from the difference....--
Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.0 -

Likewise, no-one has lost anything until they sell their home so there is no point in discussing houses have dropped by x amount when you plan to ride the storm and stay put.
Why are there so many HPC threads then? Its only a crash if you sell surely?
So your point of ive not made anything until house is sold is in direct comparison to your, houses have fallen x amount.
I never said Aberdeen will remain untouched, it's clear to see that it has fallen a little already, but it will probably be 1 of the 'safe' areas where it wont have a dramatic effect.0
