Just received a call from webuyoldgold.co.uk and they received my jewellery which I posted on Friday and will be getting £134.26 for it. The money will be credited to my account in the next 2-3 days:j

The gentleman I spoke to was really lovely too. Still cannot believe my jewellery was worth that much as it wasn't even a large number of items that I sent.

What a great start to the week:D

I imagine you'd have got more shopping around locally.
I was offered £25 for 1 plain 9ct gold ring (4.8g) by a local jeweller.
I'm always suspicious of companies that you have to send your stuff off to. If they've offered that much with no haggling I'd wonder what your stuff is really worth. Gold prices are very good right now.
  • It's also convenience. Both high street and online have their place. Personally I don't have time to trudge around and would be happy to just get rid of my stuff in the knowledge that I might receive slightly less. For others, they might feel that the time invested in getting various quotes will be worth the higher payoff...everyone has different needs...

Anyone know which jewellery chains (see what I did there?) are best to approach locally? They certainly don't promote any kind of trade-in offers!

I'd stick to independent jewellers rather than chains. Don't imagine the likes of H Samuel would have any interest in buying 2nd hand jewellery.
Quality of what you can buy from independents is also better in my opinion as many of them have been family businesses for years so want to maintain a reputation. Many can also make jewellery to your design.

I recently sold some broken bits and pieces that used to belong to my mum through eBay and got just under £5/gram which was about market value at the time and not bad for broken chains and single earings

9ct gold is worth £5.95 per gram
    18ct is double that = £11.90
    21ct triple = £17.85

Weigh anything before sending or taking to the jewellers so you know what you should expect them to offer you. This information came from an expert who I know

The scrap value is often a lot more than the commercial value so when you go to the jewellers ask for both prices and take the highest - if nothing else it will show you know what you are talking about and you are then less likely to get ripped off
Not been here in years! Hi everyone. Make £10 a day challenge = £78.45/155

webuyoldgold site is run by Knights the Jewellers who have had a shop in Dundee for a good many years. Even though I live in Dundee, think I'll give it a go by post. Would feel funny walking into the shop, especially as I can only go at weekends when they are busiest!

Does gold have to be hallmarked to be valuable? I've got a heavy gold ring my ex from years ago bought me in Bahrain which is chunky, reddish (but not rose gold) and a yellow gold bangle, also not marked. Are these worth anything? (If I can find them!)
  • Great posts, never really thought of clearing my jewellery box. So I gave it a go yesterday I looked on-line at all the suggested sites (even got my kitchen scales out) Looks like my old jewellery (broken in many cases) is going to be worth a couple of hundred pounds ! Fantastic.

After looking on the web I rang round, becuase I was a little nervous of getting it stolen. All were very helpful, but i've given Cooksons a go - helpful on the phone plus freepost, & a free tamper proof container to send it back in. http://www.cooksongold.com/scrap/ or Tel: 0207 400 6508
