  • I have looked at the webuyoldgold website and it looks trustworthy to me. It looks like a Dundee based local jewellers who are utilising the internet to get more scrap gold in as their customer base might be quite small in their area. I think I will give this a go. Easier than trudging round my local high street in the rain... Oh, and they take old silver, gold and platinum so silver is an option here too.

You'll probably find many commercial retail chains such as HSamuel (ratners..!), etc won't but in second hand or scrap.

Although there are a few smaller chains that deal in second-hand who will also buy scrap.

Aside from that, you're better off trying an independent jeweller - you may get a better price, plus they're actually willing to barter/haggle and do part exchanges, etc.
  • Sorry, forgot to say, they know they are being talked about on Money Saving Expert as one of the options for 'how did you find out about us' is 'Money Saving Expert'...this gives them some credibility in my eyes....could be wrong...

Like I said, get a quote for your precious metals before you send it off.

Shopping around could grab you an extra 80%!
This could be the difference between £30 and £200. Or just £50 and £70.

    Don't forget to haggle! ;)

I'd happily take a pleasant walk along my local highstreet and drop into the local jewellers to see what price they'd give me, especially if it meant an extra £100 or more!!

    ;)

a couple of years ago I had a pot with
lots of chains, rings brooches etc all of
it just costume stuff.none of it real gold
or silver, the brooches were not much to
write home about missing stones broken
clasps etc.I washed the lot in Fairy
washing liquid dried it took pics and listed
it on ebay starting on £4.99 it finished a
    few pence over £10.

Its a shame because I had the pics hosted
on picsave at the time and they lost
everything I had hosted,I am with
    photobucket now,hopefuly that wont
happen again.I listed it as junk jewellery
    sold as seen

  • "there are tons of jewellers who buy scrap as its the only way for them to make any money at the moment (that and selling bullion)." / Nanokitten.
I wouldn't say that was the only way for jewellers to make money at the moment as far as my colleagues across the UK tell me, Nanokitten, as people are still buying jewellery and gifts and having birthdays and anniversaries, you know.
    Great post Skyhigh.
  • Mr BDJ has a heavy platinum wedding ring kicking around from his first marriage...I wonder if I can persuade him to sell it ;)
:DBelly by name, JELLYBELLY by nature! :o
  • this looks like a good one, there are several online but these seem to give the best trade in amount. http://www.hattongardenmetals.com/. ive got a bracelet that weighs 177.5g and according to their calculator at todays prices they would give me £969.40. i wouldnt bother with ebay, people try and beat you down to the bare minimum!

As others said, most jewellers are surviving mostly off scrap gold - since no one is buying jewellery (specifically gold) due to the inflated prices.....and also people having less disposable income.

Although selling scrap gold is pretty win-win, you get a decent amount of cash to fend off the credit crunch with and the jeweller makes a small profit too.

There's been a lot of redundancies regarding reps selling jewellery and watches, since the outlets aren't selling them, no-ones buying in new stock....so it all slows down.

If I haven't said it before:
Shop around for the best scrap price, never send it off without a quote first!

    ;)

Don't be embarrassed about taking any 'strange' or 'distasteful' pieces in for scrap, the jewellers don't care what it looks like, they only care about the weight - and remember, someone had to design that piece, manufacture it, sell it wholesale and then sell it retail!
You wouldn't believe some of the jewellery thats made....especially by places like DAN (bling bling!)

    Ever seen a 9 inch tall 'rag-doll' witch on a broom or a 1KG chain? ;)
