Any easy and cheap ways to share an Epson DX4400 printer and external hard drive between the various computer, cable only, around the house?
I currently have the computers connected by cable to a Netgear router which has 5 ethernet ports and wi/fi, I would like the printer and h/d to be independent of a computer if possible.
Networking is not really my thing so any suggestions appreciated.
Mr T
If you really want the devices to be independant, then you could add a print server to your printer (from around £25), I don't think there is a similiar device for an external hard drive, although if you are yet to buy the hard drive then you can get a "network attached storage" (NAS) type.
A much easier solution however would be to use a PC to act as both the print server and the fileserver on the network. This could be any old PC, it wouldn't have to be anything fancy.0 -

Hi there, I wonder if anyone can help, I have read through the "sticky" links at the front but can't seem to find the answer, would be grateful for a point in the right direction or any advice.
We bought a PC yesterday after researching, but being not so up with the technology we didn't realise it had no wireless unitl I tried to connect to our Virgin Wireless router. So now we need to get either a USB Wireless modem or something similar. Am I correct? I don't know where to begin and am desperate to use our shiny new PC!! Help!!!
(PS: could connect direct to modem via ethernet cable but the location is so awkward and cable so short this isn't even worth doing temporarily as would block the view of the TV! LOL)0 -
New laptops nearly always have wireless inbuilt, but desktop PC's rarely do.
If you have no wireless on the PC, you can either get a longer ethernet cable to reach your modem/router, or get a wireless dongle something like this
- assuming of course you have a wireless router to connect to.0 -
Do any of you guys know a software that allows a desktop computer running on XP to turn itself into a wireless hotspot where two or more computers can connect to it? Ad hoc doesn't cut it as it seems only one computer can connect at a time.0

Fran, all good stuff but what with technology moving as fast as it does, a lot of these locked threads you link to are probably no longer current.____________________________________

Hi All,
 I'm in need of help but please be patient with me.
I have a D-link wireless ADSL modem (DSL2640R) which allows up to 24Mbp and is WPA encrypted. (good job i can read the back of the modem isnt it). :rotfl:
Anyway, i have made myself a little office area but have just realised that there is no access to a telephone socket so a friend told me to buy a wireless usb adapter so i can use the old relegated desktop wirelessly rather than us fight over the laptop. :T
So i went onto D-link but havent a clue which type 2 choose as there are 13? Does it matter, as long its a wireless USB adapter? Or do i need 2 look for a specific thing?
Hope you can help me or am i a lost cause?
Many thanks

File Sharing...
Two computers, 1x running Windows 7 (Acer R3610) & 1x running Windows XP Professional (Acer Laptop).
File sharing is enabled, both computers can share files through the workgroup/home group.
Problem -
Only files can be transferred using the Windows 7 computer. This computer can access the laptop, move files about etc through the wireless/LAN cable, though its not the other way round. We cannot transfer files from the laptop (XP) to the Computer (Win 7).
We suspect that both computers need Win7 to be able, instead its a case of doing work on the laptop, then using the Win7 computer to backup the files.?
Any tips to get XP to file share with Win 7, especially so we can access/view the Win 7 files?0 -

Win 7 can be picky.
One thing to try, assuming just the one account on the XP machine, make sure it has a password.
To set password > Control Panel > User Accounts, then select the account and 'Add password' (can't recall exact wording).Move along, nothing to see.0 -
