OP, Firstly not sure if you are totally telling the truth as you should be getting more tax credits than £19 per week on an income of £21K also once you go back to work you may well be entitled to working tax for help with childcare if you require it- why not try an alternative such as housing association or shared ownership schemes rather than just thinking of council properties i belive in most areas of the UK there are shortages of properties in local councils so you may just have to think of an alternative.
  • 'newmum' I am not a liar thanks. We only get £19 like I said I will call them again today because my friend is getting £40 per week? At least if they have been underpaying us then hopefully we will get a rebate.
Our council also deal with all of the housing association properties too so we are on the list of either type.
  • Hi hethmar, I've been in the OP's situation, not much different now in fact, but I've just finished a course, (managed to get funding, had to relocate though!) so should be better off soon.

I agree with lynne though, a council house is not really realistic, especially in Somerset! Nice idea and in an ideal world, but not realistic.

So the OP can either continue to feel resentful and aim for the impossible, or she can decide to take control and change her situation. When we had debts we worked extra hours to pay them off. We didn't have tax credits either, so it was hard, but we felt it was necessary, to better our situation. Without debts we were Ok, still skint, but we could eat and buy food and an occasional treat. We never went out or had hols though, many people with kids can't, we just felt lucky to have each other, loads of people don't have anyone!

Well its hard to judge another persons situation leyla - I can remember being so hungry my stomach hurt when we were in that situation. And of course then depression sets in and it becomes a vicious circle. So whilst I appreciate for some people it would encourage them to get out and act positively with others it just doesnt work that way. As they say, walk a mile in the other mans shoes first.
Whatever the situation, first call should be to the CAB.
  • this board is about money saving and helping (and housing) .... its not about lying to get houses etc

and if you really want a council place green why dont you report your brother in law for lying ... that would free up a house for someone in need (like yourself?)

You winge about how unfair it is that assylum seekers (seems strange that someone who might get killed in there own country can get a place to live that safeish) can get help - god help you or anyone else if this country ends up in the state of some of the place they come from

You winge about paying above average rent ... yet your living in a mold infested place and havent had the brains to find out how to go about forcing the landlord to sort it

You winge about drug users and single moms getting a place .... ditch your husband, risk putting your baby in care and start doing drugs ... you might become a priority case .. no need to lie then

You moan at only having £50 spare after paying for everything ... yes its not alot but people on this site and everywhere else are in serious debt ... theres nothing to stop you finding free hobbies is there?

You claimed you were swapping utility providers regularly etc ... seems like youve only done it once from what youve said after

Some suggested evening courses but you shot that down ... obviously your OH couldnt drive you there? or that course can be done online at home? (infact your putting off looking for courses til your kid goes to school so you have more time for them??).

and this is the line that just sums you up to me
At the end of the day who wants to spend their whole lives working hard for nothing?
So you should have it for free? ... like the people you slagged off, the druggies immigrants and asylum seeks ..... do you really want there life?
Your not working for nothing now .. you are now working to give your kid a good start in life hopefully - sort yourself out instead of relying on other when your in no real need

You already have a head start on the vast majority of the counrty by not being in debt and your still not happy and are now quiet happy to lie and get more (yet moan when people like your brother in law already do it and do nothing - your BIL is the equvillent of the druggies etc and you now want to be like him .... great roll model for you kid )

Hi grimbo green, do you work more than 16 hours a week? If so you should definately be getting £40 a week.

Maybe the fact that you were on maternity leave changed your entitlement, because obviously you wont have childcare costs if you're not working.

But that extra £160 a month will I'm sure make a lot of difference to you.

I completely agree with you, and some other posters, that if an 80 year old single person is living in a 3 bedroomed house, then whilst it is unfortunate if they have to move it is more unfair to expect a couple with 2 children to continue living in a 1 bedroomed flat because there is literally nowhere else to house them, just so someone can keep their memories.

I also think that if you earn over a certain threshold you should not be entitled to social housing, and if appropriate should be forced to move out.

However, with your earnings you can afford private rent, even if you struggle a bit. So you don't need a council house and there are many others who are much worse off than you financially on the waiting list. Also you may well be offered housing in an awful area, and I know I'd rather pay twice as much privately than have to live on some of the estates near me.

Oh come on Global, how many of the Eastern Bloc, Polish and Portugese immigrants are likely to be killed in their own countries? Support the people born here - they seem to have become second class citizens in their own country. if the immigrants who get council housing were judged by the truth of their stories, I bet a good percentage wouldnt be homed! For gawds sake bringing half a dozen unrelated kids with you to claim benefits seems rife, let alone pretending they were political activists!

As far as I can see the OP is justified in making a claim for benefits and for hoping to get some better housing.

I have been in that situation, worse actually, before tax credits were invented, so yes I have walked in those shoes (and had pretty bad depression). The reality is that apart from flats in very deprived, and dangerous areas, council houses aren't available in SW England. Would she feel better if she was scared to leave her house in daylight, let alone night-time?

Therefore helping the OP to think of practical ways to improve her situation is better than encouraging her to feel deprived and hard done by, which willonly lead to feeling worse and having more depression. She should get onto the waiting list but in the meantime get on with her life.

I thought they were now more likely to be killed by the drink fuelled British stag parties, especially those who've paid to go on extreme stag weekends :D
