Ignore the posts about not doing your research or reading reviews.
Based on the information you've supplied, you DON'T have a BAD printer.
You either have:
A FAULTY printer.
or
FAULTY ink cartridges.
If the Epson cartridges don't fix the problem, then you need to take it back to PC World.0 -
I have one of these.

And for general printing ect its good. It even prints out pictures quite well (but not as good as an inkjet). For diagrams and Bar graphs ect it will be adequate.
The toners it comes with (1 black and 3 colour ones) do about 1000 pages (well the black does as I printed out 100 pages of text and it used 10% of the toner). And I have printed full A4 colour pictures approx 10 of them and the colour toners have not moved on the usage bar).
It cost 100quid and I bought a spare black toner which was approx £30. Its a cheaper way of printing in the long run. then just get a cheap scanner it doesnt take up any more space than a combi printer."Well, that sounds like a pretty good deal. But I think I got a better one. How about I give you the finger, and you give me my phone call"

Surely this is a troll that asked the question? It is costing you £20 for cartridges and you haven't googled! The companies should charge you even more, as a stupidity tax.
Have a look here http://svp.co.uk/category/ink_and_toner_cartridges/?&pl=999
They do cartridges from £2.59 for a full set of cartridges. One off cartridges from £1.36. A CISS system for £20.56
Also here is the Epsom printers software cartridge reseter - it may help, if your printer is on the list http://www.ghacks.net/2008/03/18/epson-software-resetter/GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time.

does anyone know then of any inkjet printers which are as economical as my old 1310 one.
The printer was about £50 back in 2005 and the tesco tesco cartridges since then have been about £16 for colour and £11 for black.
i use about 1/4 of my print outs as black text only as a full page, about half with some colour and black but not much colour, just the old bit, and about the remaining quarter with some black but mostly colour on a page.
With these ink cartridges I have been getting about 600 sides in all my printing. both ink cartridges lasted about 4 to 5 months which I wouldn't say was excessive printing.
If there's now not a inkjet which is better than this or the same then I'm going to have a good look at this -
