drunk

I had an HP printer the 1310 desktop make until July this year. I had had it for about 3 years and it used the HP56 and HP57 ink cartridges. I was buying them from tesco or morrisons cheaper than the HP price and I were happy with the compatiable ink cartridges. they were about £20 each and I was using about 3 of each a year. (I'm a uni student.) So about £120 a year in ink....

but

in July this year the printer broke and I looked around for a new one and decided on the Epson Stylus DX7450 from pc world for £42.99. Not a cheap or expensive printer I thought as I have seen othrs advertised at 20 quid.

Anyway since I have started back at uni 3 weeks ago I have used £40 in printer ink, colour and black. So this is a total of 8 ink cartridges at a fiver each as these are the smaller ones (but only about half size of the HP ones) where you get 3 different colour ones. One of the colour ones only lasted 2 days. This is again in tesco and morrisons compatiable ink cartridges.

Went into PC world the other day to say not happy as its drinking my ink and therefore my money!!

They said to use the epson ones only. Thought it might not be truth and its a way of getting me out of shop. But I'll try it. Anyway I've bought some off the net, but not yet come, only ordered today.

I have been printing off lecture notes so the same sort of material with the same amount of ink in each slide. I have only been getting about 10 sides off with the ink cartridges which is no way excessive printing. If I don't get at least 60 sides off (which is about what I was getting with the HP printer) then its going back to pc world.

I want back the £42.99 and the £40 in ink cartridges which the printer has drunk. I also want back compensation for having to waste petrol money and valuable time for constantly having to go out and buy more ink cartridges. I have not been able to print everything I would like to have printer for my last year at uni and this has put me at a disadvantage.

I am appalled at the way this printer has been drinking my ink and so my money.  very !!!!ed off

Your fault. You chose the printer clearly without reading recommendations or reviews.

    You can only blame yourself.

And if you're printing thousands of lectures notes every week what else do you expect?

If you're only getting 10 sides of A4 per ink cartridge then something's wrong, either with the ink or the printer.

I've got a Stylus DX8400, using Jet-Tec compatibles, and the ink usage is actually pretty good.

If you're only printing lecture notes, get a laser printer HERE.
Hundreds of sides out of one cartridge.
Keep the Epson just for colour.
    Move along, nothing to see.

I have only printed about 12 pages of lecture notes because I can not do anymore printing I have no money left for ink. The printer, and all other printers do not have a comparison for printer ink useage. I had not idea how crap the printer was before I bought it, I could not find any reviews on it.

pc world is going to pay up

Well they wont... I remember reading that while oil was at $100 a barrel, ink was at $5,000 a barrel.

Your concern is nothing new. People have moaned about it forever.

    Printing in colour is expensive.
    Printing B&W is less expensive.
Laser B&W printing is cheaper still.
Printing 1/2 size on both sides of the paper cheaper again.

Not running a car is cheaper than running one.

There are lots of places cheaper than PC world.

Attending university doesn't exempt you from the School of Hard Knocks.

Its Caveat Emptor innit, or something like that.

Flog it to a (not too much of a ) mate and buy something better after reading the reviews.

as has been said, laser is the way to go for high volume, low cost monochrome printing. I have an epson r200 (I like to print on my DVDs) and am very happy with my ink usage, but i get my inks form ebay in batches of 40 or so dirt cheap.
this thread has some info on ppp, more info on google, i'm sure.
May also be worth investing in inksaver it is very good!

you can get anything out of any store if you speak to the right person.

With my old HP printer I used to get colour for about 3p a side and just black for about 1.5 p a side. now its costing me £1.43 a side for colour. All this is based on printing the same sort of stuff with the same standrad printing quality.

I'll say it again, something's wrong.

Based on your figures, either your printer's faulty or your ink cartridges are. The printer isn't inherently a bad one, at least not nearly that bad. If using genuine Epson cartridges doesn't fix it, then chuck it back at PC World and demand a replacement or a refund.

It's hardly a newsflash that PC World are useless and overpriced, by the way.
