Does anyone who has had success mind posting your mail, i seem to be met with deafening silence. I know I don't have a case under the appeal rules (been in the house too long) but lots of people here seem to be having success with the less formal e-mail complaint route.

PP Glad you got something back for council tax.

I posted a couple of months ago. It's on cutting tax..

'Council Tax. Are you paying more than your neighbours. Check it out'.

Others have had lower bandings and refunds.

To all MSE's this is worth trying.

It's on Cutting tax.. (I don't know how to do the link).

Have a look MSErs. You might be eligible for a lower banding and a refund.

    Good Luck.. Maisie OP

Looked for Maises thread but can't find it!

Good news though, got a reply about my appeal, they want me to call them in order to discuss... anyone had any dealings over the phone, what can I expect?

I used this web site https://www.VOA.gov.uk and found the house in my road in a lower tax bracket which had been extended hadn't been rebanded when it was sold. I complained to the council and they put me in touch with their valuation office.
They look at the value of your home only. They take into account what you paid for it, at what time and other simular properties in your area. You can go up as well as down.

The web site for rebanding is in the my post above.

Last update from me on this topic...

I called the number which was a local number, so I guess the VOA forward queries on to the local valuations office. A very pleasent guy answered, remembered my query and just wanted to confirm a few details. Following this he confirmed that my council tax band would be reduced and that I would get a rebate for the time I have been at the property.

The easiest savings I have made in a long time!

Is there a way to find out how much a neighbour's council tax is on the site? I've just realised we are in band E yet our next door neighbour which is also a 3 bed detached is band D. I'm wondering whether this means we are paying more than they are. That would be unfair wouldn't it?
The reason people don't move right down inside the carriage is that there's nothing to hold onto when you're in the middle.

    Yes, you're paying more.

Aren't the banding values on your council tax bill?

Otherwise, just ask your local council - it may have a council tax helpline.

Thanks, irnbru. I've found the values in a leaflet with my latest bill and I rang the valuation office up to lodge a case. They will get back to me within 2 months.

  • We got our council tax band changed a few years ago.Every house in our road is a semi except us as we are the mid of 3, so I pointed this out and very quickly they just rebanded and gave us a discount right back to when council tax started ( even though we hadn't lived here for 4 years of that!)
