I complained to the Valuation office that my flat is band C, when the other exactly the same flats as me are in band B, they told me it will take 2 months to sort out!!!

Although you pay council tax in Scotland it looks as though the government are not prepared to give you the same service as tax payers in England and Wales as this is all the site search function covers!!

    it does say:

"In Scotland council tax and business rates are dealt with by the Scottish Assessors"

although i have no idea how you would contact these assessors... contact your local mps office perhaps?

Im in the exact same situation! Me and my sister both got an apartment each at a new development and pay band C tax. Then when I came across this website and the VOA link I found that everyone else in our block is paying band B only, as I found out after 6mths (found out on the 8th month) they said the best they could do for me was change it in june 06 and backdate the over payments.

I just had my council tax reduced from band c to b to make it the same as the rest of the apartments in my block, but when I bought the place, I did so under a city worker scheme so the apartment is 25% cheaper than the other ones. So would I be able to apply for a further reduction or would that not count for council tax purposes?

I don't think that would count. You're now in the same band as the other properties. The fact you paid less for it is neither here nor there.

Tried a very polite e-mail to ask about the assesment of houses in my area, seems all the houses are banded at B on my street except five, one of which is mine :-(

They didn't even have the common courtesy to reply to my e-mail. Guess I'll have to be less polite next time

What if a property was undervalued when built - e.g. band C when all the other similar-sized neighbouring properties were in band E? A conservatory has gone on in the past year so the property will be subject to a banding revaluation when the sale goes through - will the increase be backdated to the date of the sale or to the introduction of council tax in 1993  ?

To update on my original statement. I WON!! No one came round, just had a letter to say they agreed with request and back dated to when I moved in, Sept 2000.

What they have done to return my money is to stop payments until August this year. Ammounts to £472. This is not as much as most, cos this is my second property and up until 2 years ago, you used to get a 50% reduction for a second house now it is only 10%.
